The chief justice of each high court is appointed by the president in consultation with the chief justice of India and state governor. High court judges are appointed through a collegium system where the Supreme Court chief justice recommends names to the president. To be appointed as a high court judge, one must be a citizen and have 10 years of experience as a judicial officer or advocate. High court judges retire at age 62 and earn salaries of Rs. 90,000 for chief justices and Rs. 80,000 for other judges. High court judges can only be removed through impeachment by parliament for misconduct or incapacity, similar to Supreme Court judges.
