This document presents the findings of a study on shelters built by NGOs after Cyclone Aila in 2009 in Bangladesh. The study analyzed 4 shelter projects from different NGOs to compare their designs and characteristics. It found that the NGO-built shelters ranged from 16-18 feet in size and used materials like CGI sheets, bamboo, and mud. They generally included features like latrines, water storage, and raised plinths. Beneficiaries reported being satisfied with the shelters but noted issues like lack of privacy and need for government assistance. The study recommends adopting building codes, improving coordination between NGOs and communities, and including additional rooms and mezzanines in shelter designs.
