This study examined whether calorie intake during the first week of life influences the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in extremely preterm infants. The study reviewed 262 extremely preterm infants less than 29 weeks gestation. It found that infants who developed BPD had similar fluid intake in the first week as infants without BPD. However, BPD was associated with a trend toward reduced cumulative protein intake in the first week. Additionally, taking longer to reach full feed was associated with an increased risk of developing BPD.
