What Constrains Smallholder Farmers Decisions to Participate and use Agricult...ijtsrd
Smallholder farmers contribute more to food security and poverty reduction in Rwanda. However, lack of agricultural finance is one of numerous challenges they face for improving productivity and increasing income along the value chain. The objectives of this paper were to determine the factors influencing the farmers’ decision to participate and use agricultural value chain financing in Rwanda and to analyse the constraints hindering smallholder farmers’ decision to participate and use agricultural value chain financing in Rwanda. Cross sectional data were collected from a random sample of 585 smallholder potato farmers in Musanze and Nyabihu Districts. Results of probit model revealed that sex, age, marital status, education, farming experience, membership to farming associations, household income and distance to market significantly influence the farmers’ decision to participate and use of agricultural value chain financing. The study also found that financing agricultural activities remain a key challenge for smallholder potato farmers. Fear of borrowing, lack of financial literacy, lack of skills in budgeting and unexpected production, interest rate and others loans charges, lack of collaterals, short repayment period and lack of financial literacy have been found to be the main factors constraining potato farmers’ participation and use of agricultural value chain financing. Nevertheless, potato productivity will always result from the interaction between all potato value chain actors. The study recommended the government and value chain stakeholders to formulate integrated policies that facilitate smallholder farmers to access to convenient financing products in order to improve productivity and to meet the customer demands. This reduction in supply along with the support by a number of Government schemes, including MGNREGA has led to an escalation in farm wages which is adversely impacting the profitability of the farmer. Rural wages have been growing by 17% on average since 2006-07 outstripping urban wages. At the same time, the increase in wages, without an increase in productivity, is fueling inflation.

On both a pilot and large-scale basis, Bangladesh has pioneered much of the safety-net approach to food security and has led in planning and developing much of the basis for longterm solutions to food security problems. I was in Professor Nurul Islam’s home for the fateful speech that, in certain respects, marked the inception of the nation, and I have continued to learn from Bangladesh through my friends and many visits over the last four decades. During that time span, the food security of Bangladeshis has increased immensely, but there is more to be done, obviously, and, fortunately, a way to do it.

India is considered as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Agriculture is the mother of most of the economies in the world. Much of its influence is on the other sectors - industry and service. India is the second largest in farm output. Hence, India’s economic security continues to be predicated upon the agriculture sector, and the situation is not likely to change in the near future. Even today, the share of agriculture in employment is about 49% of the population, as against around 75% at the time of independence. There are several reasons like vicious cycle of poverty, crops failure, illiteracy, high indebtedness, low level of income, low level technology, Government Policies, addiction to alcohol, domestic affairs, old traditions, pessimistic outlook of farmers etc. are some of the main reasons for agricultural crisis and farmers suicides in India. Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala are the top most five states in India in farmers suicides. The need of the hour is protect our farmers by all means, thus avoiding their suicides and agrarian crisis. This Paper is an attempt to focus attention on causes of agricultural crisis and farmer suicides in India with special reference to Telangana.
It is observed from the analysis that at national level as well as zone level, there is unequal distribution of total subsidies . The increasing rate of total subsidies (fertilizers, electricity and irrigation) is higher than gross cropped area (GCA) during pre, first as well as second phase of liberalization periods. In total subsidies during pre-liberalisation period, the percentage share of fertilizers subsidies is maximum (38.41 in 1980-81 and 37.63 in 1985-86), whereas during 1990-91 to 2000-01, the percentage share of electricity subsidies is maximum and again in 2008-09 fertilizers subsidies has got major percentage share 87.26 per cent in total subsidies. There is a lot of variation to find out the relationship between gross cropped area (GCA) and in total subsidies in zones throughout the study period. As zone level, it is observed that there is a negative relationship between GCA and total subsidies, in west zone and in north zone (in 2006-07) and in east zone (1996-97 and in 2006-07). It is seen that there is a direct relationship in GCA and total subsidies i.e. GCA as well as total subsidies have increased at zone level in west and in north (during 1980-81 to 2000-01), in
south zone (during 1980-81 to 1996-07) and in north-east zone (during 1980-81 to 2006-07). From the above discussion, it is concluded that in India, the total subsidies of fertilizers, electricity and of irrigation have increased in terms of per hectare during pre, first as well as second liberalisation periods, whereas the increasing rate is higher in 1985-86 among all the other years and lowest rate in 2000-01. Productivity has declined in the year 1996-97 at country as well as zone level.
Agricultural Credit and Farm Output of Cooperative Members in Anambra State, ...ijtsrd
This study examined the effect of agricultural credit on farm output of members of selected cooperative societies in Anambra State Nigeria. Data was collected from 260 cooperative farmers from 10 cooperative societies in Anambra East LGA in Anambra State. Also 260 non cooperative farmers were equally selected to act as control group Descriptive and inferential were applied to collected data. Evidence from the study showed that cooperative members had more access to agricultural credit than non members. Furthermore, results from the regression analysis showed that farm size, farm inputs, credit and access to cooperative credit were positive and important determinants of farm output. The implication of the significance of access to cooperative credit is a confirmation of the primacy of cooperative as a source of credit to rural farmers. Indeed, significance of use of credit and access to cooperative credit equally confirms the main thrust of Vroom's expectancy theory that a particular course of action is chosen based upon perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs of a positive return. Agriculture sector is playing a significant role in the
development of rural areas in our country. Agriculture is the
main occupation and still is a strong means of livelihood and
there is necessity for ensuring sustainability in these
livelihoods. Agriculture and allied sectors contribute nearly
22% of GDP of India and further 9.93% contribution in total
export of India.
Rural indebtedness, agricultural distress,
dependency on private money lenders, and farmers suicides
are common features surrounding Indian Agriculture. For
more than 100 years RBI and Central Government have been
making efforts to enhance institutional credit in rural areas
particularly to assist agricultural operations. But economic
survey (GOI) 2010 shows that out of 27 public sector banks,
only 14 sector banks achieved the agricultural credit target of
18% agricultural credit and in case of private sector banks
only 8 achieved the target of 18% for lending to agriculture
in 2009.
The Effect of Commercial Banks Credit on Agricultural Sector’s Contribution t...ijtsrd
This study is an analysis of the effect of commercial banks’ credit to agriculture on the agricultural sector’s contribution to Nigerian real gross domestic product from 1986 to 2020. Specifically, this study ascertained the effect of commercial banks’ credit to agriculture, inflation rate and interest rate on the agricultural sector’s contribution to real gross domestic product. The Autoregressive Distributive Lag ARDL was the econometric tool of analysis employed using data sourced from the statistical bulletins of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN . The findings of this study in its totality unveiled statistically that commercial banks’ credit to agriculture does not affect the sector’s contribution to real gross domestic product. In the light of the findings, there is a critical need for commercial banks to increase loans to agricultural enterprises through a reduction in interest rate charge for agricultural purposes, which in turn permits for greater economic growth and development. The Central Bank of Nigeria can encourage this through a reduction in the monetary policy rate which inflicts the high interest rate charged by the commercial banks. The Central Bank of Nigeria can also appeal to the commercial banks to reduce their collateral requirements to encourage more farmers, especially the rural farmers to have access to finance for agricultural production. The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
