I then lead the group in a workshop to help them create paper prototypes.

Lisa Tweedie is a User Experience Mentor who provides guidance on user experience principles. In her role, she mentors others on five key user experience truths: you can't just ask people what they want, design involves making choices from many possible solutions, borrowing ideas is acceptable, testing with users early and often is important, and that user experience is constantly changing.

On Feb 22, 2018 I ran an IdeaLab session for 300 high school students in Mumbai as part of the TiE Global Summit. IdeaLab is a fun, fast-paced activity where you develop a great idea in about an hour. IdeaLab is the first group activity for TiE Young Entrepreneurs, an invention education program.

At last year’s Denver Startup Week, we partnered with the City of Denver to reimagine how their collection of public art is discovered and interacted with throughout the city. We taught participants how to sprint by actually doing one—or, at least, a condensed version of one. Attendees participated in key design sprint activities, focused on the goal of increasing awareness of public art in Denver. They (hopefully) left the session with insights into the design sprint process, and our team left with real user feedback on the problem we were trying to solve.

Vrijdag 31 mei vond in Leuven de eerste workshop van iMade plaats. Het doel van deze reeks van 3 workshops is het uitwerken van een realistisch, haalbaar en innovatief businessmodel dat kan dienen als blauwdruk voor ‘de fabriek van de toekomst’. De workshops worden met professionele hand begeleid door Board Of Innovation en aangevuld met presentaties gegeven door verscheidene professionals die elk hun focus rond duurzame, lokale productie op maat toelichten.
In de eerste workshop werd het project iMade geschetst in het kader van de derde industriële revolutie. Hoe kunnen we deze technologische innovaties omzetten naar een systeeminnovatie die duurzaamheid in zijn DNA meedraagt? Hieronder kan je naast de overkoepelende presentatie van Plan C en Board Of Innovation ook de bijdragen van de verschillende iMade-partners terugvinden.
Stella Vanassche: Duurzaamheidsbewaking binnen iMade
Stella Vanassche van VITO legt uit hoe duurzaamheidsbewaking voor digitale productie vormgegeven zou kunnen worden adhv drie principes:
• Beperk het materiaalgebruik
• Maximaliseer het gebruik van gerecycleerde materialen
• Minimaliseer de impacten van waardeketens op de beschikbaarheid van natuurlijke hulpbronnen, rekening houdend met economische efficiëntie en sociale rechtvaardigheid.
Karel Van Acker: De technologische uitdagingen van iMade
Karl Van Acker van KU Leuven belicht het onderwerp vanuit een materiaal-technologisch standpunt. Additive manufacturing staat nog in de kinderschoenen. Zo is nog maar een beperkt pallet aan materialen beschikbaar voor deze technologie. De ontwikkeling van specifiek aangepaste materialen verloopt bovendien langzaam. De technologie heeft de mogelijkheid om tegemoet te komen aan verschillende vereisten inzake duurzaam materiaalbeheer. Wanneer het design van producten aangepast wordt aan de techniek, kan er een enorme hoeveelheid energie, water en materiaal bespaard worden. Men kan bovendien reeds printen met biogebaseerde polymeren (PLA, zetmeel, suikers) en men onderzoekt de recyleerbaarheid van geprinte objecten. Ook schept additive manufacturing verwachtingen voor het behouden van lokale productie.
Walter Tempst & Elmar Willems: iMade en het regelgevende kader
Welke rol kan de overheid in dit verhaal spelen? Walter Tempst en Elmar Willems van OVAM gaan dieper in op deze. 3D printing kwam de laatste tijd verschillende malen aan bod in de media, soms positief, maar ook negatief. Toch moet er niet zomaar een regulerende rol toebedeeld worden aan de overheid. In het komende anderhalf jaar zal de OVAM daarom actief participeren in het iMade project. Doelstelling is om tegen eind 2014 een passend beleidskader uit te werken. OVAM zal daarbij aansluiting zoeken met partners van NIB-projecten, regionale, federale en Europese overheden.
Gert De Bruyn: iMade product-dienst business modellen
Gert De Bruyn, van Royal Haskoning DHV, beschrijft aan de hand van twee cases hoe nieuwe business modellen duurzaam materiaalbeheer kunnen ondersteunen. Traditioneel wenst een toeleverancier zo veel mogelijk te verkopen, terwijl de gebruiker zo efficiënt mogelijk wenst te werken. Met het MIP project TaBaChem werkt Royal Haskoning een business model uit waarbij chemische producten zoals zwavelzuur niet verkocht maar geleased worden. De win-win is duidelijk. De producent recupereert de chemicaliën na gebruik. De gebruiker maakt zich geen zorgen meer over de afdanking of verwerking ervan.
Hiermee komt een eerste bottleneck naar boven. De recyclage en recuperatie van materialen door een derde partij maken het ter beschikking stellen van de materiaalinhoud van producten noodzakelijk. Bij het aanleggen van een dergelijke materialendatabase speelt het beschermen van IP een belangrijke rol. Niet elke leveranciers staat er voor te springen om zijn ‘keukengeheimen’ te delen met zijn klanten. In het voorbeeld van Recover-e is men er in geslaagd dit te doorbreken door de oprichting van een stichting waarbij de partners de nodige geheimhoudingscontracten tekenen.
Gil stevens: iMade Cradle to Cradle business modellen
Gil Stevens van het Cradle to Cradle Platform inspireert met een concreet voorbeeld over hoe een tapijtenfabrikant een Cradle to Cradle strategie uitwerkt in een werkbaar business model. Drie uitdagingen staan hierin centraal: Het stellen van de juiste doelstellingen door middel van een focus op eco-effectiviteit, het sluiten van kringlopen via bio en techno cycles en dit op een zodanige manier dat de materialen hun kwaliteitsniveau behouden (upcyclen).
