2. Who you are
I Yosun Chang is an award-winning AR creative software dev
whose solo work has been mistaken as entire startups.
Still California-based: she recently moved from San Francisco
to Newport Beach, CA to focus on being an artist.
Things she is passionate about often turn into mini-careers:
• Fascinated by dramaturgy and new forms of stage production,
she spent three years as a Shakespearean theatre director.
•Trying to spend as much time with her dog as she can, she has
created a world-traveling corgi... (Inadvertently bringing random acts of joy
and “the best thing that’s happened to me today” to hundreds - at conferences she contributes to
such as SIGGRAPH, Makerfaire, Augmented World Expo and offices, airports, hackathons+more!)
3. Who you are: artist statement
I Yosun Chang deeply believes in creating things that delight people because they previously
thought it was impossible, “building what she can imagine” using the medium of emerging
technologies or inventing her own, when the tech isn’t there yet.
Having won numerous hackathons from 3x First Place @ Intel Perceptual Challenge to 2x Grand Prize @
TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon to Grand Prizes at AT&T IoT Hackathon and WB + AT&T Shape Hackathon, she
uses the designation “augmented reality hacker-entrepreneur” as someone who “hacks out”
software that people believe is made by a startup using >1 new technologies, such as AR, IoT,
ML/AI, etc - usually, solo.
Her goal is to help mature the new media art field by creating truly innovative software with
skill level tantamount to the classical masters—not an experienced software-engineer but an
artist at her prime.

6. Where you’re headed
Having built a vast array
of many different types of AR software and art / hacks,
I still haven’t made the one I’d like to be “known for.”
Maybe PaperMata is the one!
My Creative Residency project
Meaningful software for creators that feels like art, to the user.
Software that invokes a sense of wonder in both creator and viewer.
Made by a dev who thinks like an artist.
8. Project goals: Why?
Help contribute to what Adobe Aero can be by building it first and proving that people love it! ;)
Adobe
• Give 2D/traditional artists the creative freedom to easily make meaningful AR+AI experiences.
• Inspire with daily clever hacks that challenge what’s possible
• Shed light on creative depression and provide a stream of delightful things for the dark days
Community
• Create an artistic legendary AR+AI platform that one creates content with using paper.
• A self-sustaining business that helps make the world better via whimsy, delight and magic.

11. Proposal for monthly community engagement
• Be less shy about sharing in-progress results.
• Get into the habit of sharing cal.permute.xyz and more on twitter, instagram, fb, ProductHunt
• Demo at tech conferences: SIGGRAPH, Augmented World Expo, Art Basel, Adobe Max etc
• Show+Tell beyond tech… at normal people events such as art and craft festivals.
Educating+Exploring on this New Medium I'm creating
• Ask for requests on content (and figure out clever ways to map that to 3D)
• Try digitizing straight to AR with new reality mediums… such as crystals and orbeez.
• Teach designers about 1:1 UV-mapping from paper to 3D models.
• Onboard 3D content creators so I’m not creating everything myself…
12. PaperMata is a postcard-medium augmented reality creativity platform
inspired by paper automata - and inhabited by tiny AI homunculi.
