The daily life of a lighthouse keeper and his family is the plot
of the story.
Basic Information
3. STYLE AND MEDIA
Blackall uses the style of realism. The
lighthouse images are realistic. They look like
lighthouses you would see when going to
Michigan.
The type of media used is painterly. You
are able to visually remember a time when
you were at a lighthouse from the
illustrations in this book.
Blackall’s style and media create a peaceful
message about what it is like being in a
lighthouse. I can hear the wind in my head
from this illustration.
4. LINE
The use of curved lines is used when
illustrating the water waves. It makes the
waves look like they are moving.
Diagonal/ curved lines are also used
when showing the wind and the
formation of clouds due to a storm
coming.
The lighthouse illustration uses vertical
lines. This shows the even with the
waves moving, the lighthouse will stay in
place.
From this image you can predict that the
lighthouse will be the protection from
the storm.
5. SHAPE
The shape is 2-dimensional and simple. They are also
supple. Geometric shapes are used when illustrating
the rocks.
Blackall uses angles to help create a realistic image of
a lighthouse.
When the waves and clouds get bigger, it signals a
storm approaching.
6. COLOR
Warm colors are used throughout the book . Black is
used when danger is coming (in this case storm). It is
monochromatic. There really isn’t a lot of different
colors in this book.
This picture on the bottom is my favorite image
because of the bright color in the book. It is at the
beginning. It makes me think that the sun is setting
for the night.
The mood is calming in this picture. When the clouds
are dark, it brings a mysterious mood to the book.
7. TEXTURE
The illustrations tend to be smooth,
clean, and two-dimensional. When
the storm comes and the clouds turn
dark, it seems that she is using paint
layers and strokes.
I believe that the flow of the book is
smooth and that when she illustrated
the waves, she was able to have her
paint be flowy.
There are times when the lighthouse
is at an angle, that the picture looks
3-dimensional.
8. COMPOSITION
The illustration is balanced
asymmetrically. The pictures flow well
with each other.
The top of the picture is more
dominant than the other. I am more
attracted to the top half of the
picture. The top half of the picture
shows the readers what the climax of
the story will be.
The imagine contains a boarder which
allows the background of the picture
become the focus of this page.
