1. This is one of my favourite pieces of work from Leibovitz. The image is absolutely captivating to me, when I
look at this image they feel as though this fairy-tale land is an actual place. The lighting is prominent and
turns almost to mist in the blue background. The most striking thing about this image is the use of the
colour blue; Leibovitz wanted to create a feel of the deep underwater and did so by using all of these
different shades of the colour. The main focal point of this image for me is the woman sat in on the rock.
This is because of her red flowing hair against the eternal blue ocean; the characters in the image are
circling her as if they are completely stricken by her beauty. The woman is also the only character fully
facing the lighting, showing her flawless face whilst the other characters in the image seem of less
importance as they are blended in to the blue background. At the top of the image there is a collection of
fish, almost adding realism to the image. This realism makes the image less fairy-tale and more plausible;
almost kidding us into actually believing this could be a real place. In the background of the image, a bright
Atlantis like city shines through the misty blue. This is a beautiful addition to the image as it shows where all
of these mermaid characters possibly live and hide from the people above. A broad depth of field is used
so all of the image can be seen and the audience feels as though they are there. A long shot is used to
show the entirety of the ocean and high contrast lighting is used to show shadows and make the woman
stand out.
2. This photograph of Decaprio was taken by
Leibovitz. The most striking part of the
image is Decaprio holding the swam in his
arms. It stands out as because of the swam
being white against the black outfit
Decaprio is wearing, therefore the outfit
Leibovitz chosen him to wear was picked
very selectively to give this effect. More
evidently, the photographer wanted the
audience to instantly look at Decaprio’s
eyes as the rule of thirds is used on this
image and his eyes fall directly on a golden. The background of the image is simple so
it doesn’t detract attention from the main focal point of the image – Decaprio. A
narrow depth of field is used in this image to emphasise Decaprio’s face and the swan
against it. In this image, the swan compliments Decaprio by standing out as it is
wrapped around Decaprio’s neck which leads the eye to Decaprio’s face. The Lighting
of the image is focused on his face, there is more contrast which softens the image.
Direct address is used in this image so that it appears Decaprio is looking at the
audience, so they feel like the image is more welcoming.
3. This photograph of Blanchett, taken by
Leibovitz is a prime example of some of her
work. The most striking thing about this image
is the eyes on the left image, there are two
images in this photograph to show the divide
in Blanchett’s personality. A close up shot on
the image is used to show the emphasis on her
face. A simple background is used and simple
clothing is used so nothing draws the attention
away from Blacnhetts face. This image signifies
the two sides of the actor, sad and psycho to
show the diversity in her performances. The
right image has more shadow, to emphasise the gloominess, a broad depth of field is
used on the whole image so all is in focus. Black and white brings emphasis on the
face, which is what Leibovitz wanted the audience to focus on. This image would most
likely be used in a magazine to show the different sides to Blanchett and her acting
diversity.
4. The most striking part of this image for me is the
pinching of the skin away from Streep's face.
It looks as if her face is being morphed. A close up
is used to emphasise on the face in the image
as this is the only thing the photographer wanted
the audience to focus on. A dark coloured
background is used so nothing detracts attention
from the face of Streep. A plain white shirt is
worn so it also doesn’t detract attention from her
face. The golden points surround the eyes and the
eyes are directly centred in the middle of the
photo. Direct address is used so the audience feels
welcomed and Streep is constantly starring at
them. The make up below the eyes also draws more
attention to the eyes of Streep. A broad depth of field is used so all of the image is in
focus as Leibovitz didn’t want any part of the image not to be in focus, as
it is all important. Lighting is low contrast bringing subtle colours and blends, so a
warm feeling Is created in the image.
5. This is my second favourite piece of work from Leibovitz. The scene is very dark and horrid. Although
the photograph may be polysemic, my opinion is that Leibovitz wanted to show how the richer section
of society has complete control over the poorer members. The men and woman lay in the dirt are
absolutely powerless and appear weak and frail whilst the characters in suites are stood tall above
them, with total control and power. The colours used are dark and miserable, setting the scene of the
photograph. In the background the sun is setting which could imply that this sort of thing happens
again and again every day and this is just the sun setting once again whilst this sort of circumstance is
taking place. The sun setting could also mean that darkness is coming and worse days are ahead. The
sky is completely covered in clouds, almost as if all light in the world has gone. Also the ability for god
to watch over the characters is now gone, it is almost as if a barrier has been placed between them. A
broad depth of field is used in this photograph so none of the image is out of focus, the whole image is
needed to create the effect. Low contrast lighting is used in this image so that the image blends as one
but the sun does stand out a lot in this image. The angle shot used is long shot to show the entirety of
the image to the audience and so none of the image is left out as it is all important.
