Scaling ArangoDB on Mesosphere DCOS
Recently, ArangoDB integrated its cluster management with Apache Mesos. This makes it now possible to launch an ArangoDB cluster on a Mesos cluster with a single, albeit complex shell command. In a DCOS-enabled Mesosphere cluster this is even easier, because one can use the dcos subcommand for ArangoDB, which essentially turns a Mesosphere cluster into a single, large computer.
In this talk I explain the whole setup and show (live on stage) how to deploy ArangoDB clusters on Amazon Web Services, and how we used this to scale ArangoDB up until it could sustain 1000000 document writes per second.

Making Apache Kafka Elastic with Apache Mesos
This document discusses Kafka on Mesos, which allows Kafka to elastically scale on the Mesos cluster. It provides a quick introduction to Mesos and Kafka. Scylla is a new, open-source NoSQL data store with a novel design optimized for modern hardware, capable of 1.8 million requests per second per node, while providing Apache Cassandra compatibility and scaling properties. While conventional NoSQL databases suffer from latency hiccups, expensive locking, and low throughput due to low processor utilization, the Scylla design is based on a modern shared-nothing approach. Scylla runs multiple engines, one per core, each with its own memory, CPU and multi-queue NIC. The result is a NoSQL database that delivers an order of magnitude more performance, with less performance tuning needed from the administrator.
With extra performance to work with, NoSQL projects can have more flexibility to focus on other concerns, such as functionality and time to market. Come for the tech details on what Scylla does under the hood, and leave with some ideas on how to do more with NoSQL, faster.

Don't change the partition count for kafka topics!
This document describes how increasing the partition count for a Kafka topic caused a "Heisenbug" where documents were not properly deleted from Elasticsearch. The system relied on Kafka message offsets to correspond to Elasticsearch document versions for consistency. However, increasing partitions changed the hashing function used to assign messages to partitions, causing messages for the same key to be stored in different partitions and have non-sequential offsets. This broke the correspondence between offsets and versions, resulting in documents failing to be deleted when tombstone messages were processed. The issue was resolved by reingesting all data into Kafka with a new topic using sequential partitioning.
DIY: A distributed database cluster, or: MySQL Cluster

It runs on Rasperry PI as well as on a cluster of multi-core machines. A 30 node cluster was able to deliver 4.3 billion (not million) read transactions per second in 2012. However, increasing partitions changed the hashing function used to assign messages to partitions, causing messages for the same key to be stored in different partitions and have non-sequential offsets. This broke the correspondence between offsets and versions, resulting in documents failing to be deleted when tombstone messages were processed. The issue was resolved by reingesting all data into Kafka with a new topic using sequential partitioning.

The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

With recent feature from IIB v10.0.0.6 – it is very easy to connect to the NoSQL databases for data manipulation using LoopbackRequest node. But enterprises already using a previous version of IIB/WMB still can work out a solution if they need to fetch data from NoSQL database. Below is a short demo how we can use java for a connectivity to CouchDB for data manipulation. Prerequisite: (add below jars to the class path of Java Project) apache-commons-lang.jar commons-httpclient-3.0.1.jar couchdb4j-0.1.2.jar ezmorph-1.0.jar json-lib.jar org.apache.commons.beanutils.jar org.apache.commons.collections.jar org-apache-commons-codec.jar org-apache-commons-logging.jar In IIB toolkit: New -> Application -> CouchDBUsingJava Create a very simple message flow like below.
