SOUND DESIGN
METHODOLOGY
Foley Artistry Foley effects are sound effects added to the film during
post production. http://www.sound-ideas.com/what-is-foley.html
Foley is a man who created music for games and other kinds of media. In lesson we had to create music for video games .
Sound Libraries A collection of sounds stored on file

library
In lesson we used a sound livery for Reaper when creating music for out video games and while on our introductory
project.
SOUND FILE
FORMATS
Uncompressed Uncompressed formats like CD Audio, WAV, or AIFF are
pretty much perfect representations of the audio that was
recorded.
https://www.prx.org/help/posting-audio/compressed-versus-
uncompressed
In Lesson we used a range of uncompressed files like WAV files. These files were used on Reaper when we were creating
sound effects for our games.
.wav
WAV is a file extension for an audio file format created by
Microsoft. The WAV file has become a standard PC audio file
format for everything from system and game sounds to CD-quality
audio.http://whatis.techtarget.com/fileformat/WAV-Waveform-
sound-Microsoft-Windows
In lesson we used WAV files when we was using our own music and sound effects on Reaper, when we had made our
piece of music we rendered the file into a WAV file.
.aiff
AIFF is a file extension for an Audio Interchange
Fileformat. AIF is an audioformatused by Silicon
Graphics and Macintosh applications.
AIFF is a file that I used to export sound into sound cloud and then used to post into blogger.

.au The AU file was introduced by Sun Microsystems. This file format
facilitates the storage of audio files, usually in three sections: a
header with maximum strength of 24 bytes, an annotation block of
variable length and the audio data itself.

Au is a fileused to export sound.
.smp Music file used by Smart Music, a music practice application for
band, orchestra, and voice; saves an accompaniment that can be
used for practicing solos and other musical parts.

This is used to transfer data.
Lossy
Compression
Lo ssy file compression results in lost data and quality
fr om the original version. Lossy compression is typically
associated with image files, such as JPEGs, but can also
be used for audio files.
http://techterms.com/definition/lossy
Lossy compressions areused to eliminateallunused information onfiles.
.mp3
MP3 (MPEG-1 AudioLayer-3)is a standardtechnology
and format for compressing a soundsequenceinto a very
small file(about one-twelfth thesizeoftheoriginal file)
whilepreserving theoriginal level ofsoundquality when
it is played.

Unit (SPU) processing, is the intentional alteration of auditory signals,
or sound, of ten through an audio ef f ect or ef fects unit. As
audio signals may be electronically represented in
either digital or analogue f ormat, signal processing may occur
in either domain. Analog processors operate directly on the
electrical signal, while digital processors operate
mathematically on the digital representation of that signal.

Digital Sound
Processor (DSP)
Digital signal processing (DSP)isthe processof
analysingandmodifyinga signal to optimize or
improve itsefficiency or performance.

DSP is used for analysing a signal and makesoundmoreefficientand performbetter.
Random Access
Memory (RAM)
Ram is a hardware device that allows information to be
stored and retrieved on a computer. RAM is usually
associated with DRAM, which is a type of memory
module.

Ram is used or thememory on thecomputer to keep morefiles and documents safe.
Mono Audio Mono audio is an accessibility feature that makes sure,
even if you're hard of hearing or deaf in one ear, you
never miss a word, note, or sound when listening to your
iPhone or iPad with a headset
on. http://www.imore.com/how-enable-mono-audio-
auditory-accessibility-iphone-or-ipad
Mono audio is used for thedeafpeopleor for thosethat havetroublehearing.
Stereo Audio Stereo Audio is a method of sound reproduction that creates an
illusion of multi-directional audible perspective. This is usually
achieved by using two or more independent audio channels
through a configuration of two or more loudspeakers (or
stereo headphones) in such a way as to create the impression of
sound heard from various directions, as in natural hearing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereophonic_sound
Stereo Audio is used to hear sound from all morethanonedirection.
Surround Sound Surround sound is a term used to describe a type of audio output in
which the sound appears to "surround the listener" by 360 degrees.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/surround_sound.html
Surround sound is used when listeningto audio inall 4directions.
Direct Audio
(Pulse Code
Modulation –
PCM)
Pulse code modulation (PCM) is a digital representation of an
analogue signal that takes samples of the amplitude of the
analogue signal at regular intervals. The sampled analogue data is
changed to, and then represented by, binary data.

Analogueis for recording certain types ofwaveforms.
Digital Mini Disc A digital disc medium for storing music or
data where a small disc is housed
in a cartridge and is either recordable or pl
ayback. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/minidisc
A digital disc mediumis used to keep music anddatasafeand secure.
Compact Disc
(CD)
(CD) is a small, portable, round medium made ofmoulded
polymer (close in size to the floppy disk) for electronically
recording, storing, and playing backaudio, video, text, and
other information in digital form.
http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/definition/compact-disc
A CD is a disc that holds a certainamount offiles and documents. Each dischas a certainamount of
memory on and can allbesecurein oneplace.
Digital Audio
Tape (DAT)
A type of magnetic tape that uses a scheme called helical scan to
record data. A DAT cartridge is slightly larger than a credit card in
width and height and contains a magnetic tape that can hold from 2
to 24 gigabytes of data.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/DAT.html
This is a typeof data recordingsystem that is thenused to holdcertain files
MIDI MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a protocol designed
for recording and playing back music on digital synthesizers that is
supported by many makes of personal computer sound cards.
Originally intended to control one keyboard from another, it was
quickly adopted for the personal computer. Rather than
representing musical sound directly, it transmits information
about how music is produced.

Software
Sequencers
In digital audio recording, a sequencer is a program in a computer
or stand-alone keyboard unit that puts together a sound sequence
from a series (or sequence) of Musical Instrument Digital Interface
( MIDI ) events (operations).
http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/sequencer
Weused a sequencer on reaper with midi when creating ourmusicandsound effects for our games.
Software Plug-
ins
Plug-in applications are programs that can easily be installed and
used as part of your Web browser. Initially, the Netscape browser
allowed you to download, install, and define supplementary
programs that played sound or motion video or performed other
functions. http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/plug-in

I used midi when wewas creating effects and music for our games I used a keyboard to createtheeffects
and music, I also inserted plug-ins intothemidikeyboard.
AUDIO
SAMPLING
File Size
Constraints -
Bit-depth
Bit depth is the number of bits used to carry the data in each
sample of audio. The bit depth chose for recording limits the
dynamic range of the recording. (Other factors in the audio chain
may also limit this, so more bits often will not produce a better
recording.) http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Bit_Depth
I used bit depth when I was exporting my soundeffects and musicinto .Wav files.
File Size
Constraints -
Sample Rate
Sample rate is the number of samples of audio carried per second,
measured in Hz or kHz (one kHz being 1 000 Hz). For example, 44
100 samples per second can be expressed as either 44 100 Hz, or
44.1 kHz. http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Sample_Rates
Sampleratewas used when I was playing my exportedmusicand sound effects to seeifit was exported
right.
