Governments around the world fund billions of dollars in research every year. Ensuring that the results of research are available to the public, other researchers and industry has become an important underlying value in order to maximize the impact of our publicly funded research. This session will discuss what’s driving the trend towards greater openness and provide an overview of international developments that will help put Canada’s activities into context.

DANS is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). It has been promoting and providing permanent access to digital research resources since 2005, building on predecessors dating back to 1964. DANS obtains certification for its repositories and services, including the Data Seal of Approval, to build trust with depositors, users, and funders by demonstrating its commitment to digital preservation best practices and transparency. The certification process also improves DANS' internal workflows and documentation.

Jisc plans to upgrade the Janet network to have 600gbps core capacity and use 400gbps optical technology. It will also rearchitect the regional network and explore network virtualization. Jisc will launch several new cybersecurity services including a security portal, DDoS mitigation, and a security conference. It will also offer cloud migration consulting, improve the geospatial service through a partnership, and expand the National Bibliographic Knowledgebase. Additionally, Jisc will provide various digital capability and learning analytics services.

RAGLD - Rapid Assembly of Geo-Centred Linked Data Applications

This talk will describe the RAGLD framework (Rapid Assembly of Geo-centred Linked Data) and examples will be given on how it can be used to make it easier to develop linked data applications. As more linked data and open data emerges a need was identified to meet a rising demand for a suite of application developers’ tools to make it easier to bring together, use and exploit these diverse data sets. RAGLD aims to create a set of tools, components and services to make it easier to develop linked Data applications. This talk will describe the RAGLD framework and examples will be given on how it can be used.

The research-practice gap in Library and Information Science (LIS) is well documented, especially in respect of the difficulties of translating research into practice, and resultant lost opportunities. While many researchers attempt to explain this research-practice gap, few suggest strategies to address it. The creation of researcher-practitioner networks, however, is one approach that has been proved empirically to bridge the distance between the two communities. Such a network is currently operating in Scotland, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Research, Impact, Value and Library and Information Science (RIVAL) is part-way through its implementation based around four knowledge exchange events for a network membership of 32 from a wide variety of LIS sectors. RIVAL’s successful delivery depends in part on the project leads’ experience of undertaking, and evaluating the impact of, a UK Arts and Humanities Research Council funded grant: the Developing Research Excellence and Methods (DREaM) project. Already there are indications that RIVAL is delivering value to network members. There is a strong expectation for this to be enhanced, both in the remainder of the funding period and beyond, offering theoretical contributions to the study of social networks, especially in respect of social capital development to support knowledge exchange.

Mercurius is named after the roman god mercurius, the god of trade and science. The planet mercurius is named after the same god. Mercurius is sometimes called hydrargyrum, means ‘watery silver’. Its shine and colour are very similar to silver, but mercury is a fluid at room temperatures. The name quick silver is a translation of hydrargyrum, where the word quick describes its tendency to scatter away in all directions. The droplets have a tendency to conglomerate to one big mass, but on being shaken they fall apart into countless little droplets again. It is used to ignite explosives, like mercury fulminate, the explosive character is one of its general themes.
