The International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation wanted to better understand how consumers would react to the proposed change in the Nutrition Facts Panel (NFP) content regarding sugars, specifically the comprehension of the potential new line in the Total Carbohydrates section called "Added Sugars." Specifically, the IFIC Foundation wanted to: Understand how consumers would interpret the new "Added Sugars" line in the NFP without any additional stimuli on a package; Understand the consumer's perception of the relationship between Total Carbohydrates, Sugars, and "Added Sugars;" and Understand how consumers use the NFP in the product purchase and consumption process.
