There’s an old phrase used at weddings, “Something old, something new…” As the Apostle Paul describes the identity of the Christian, he often contrasts the something old and the something new. In 2 Cor. 5:17 Paul describes the Christian believer as a new creature in Christ. But he also describes a transformation whereby something old has passed away. In Ephesians 4:24 the same Apostle calls us to “put off” the old self and “put on” the new self. All of this language of old and new seems to go back to Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus where he challenged him to be “born again”. Our identity is part of a story of transformation. Just as we have old roots, we also have a new destiny… a legacy to leave and an assignment to fulfill (Eph. 2:10)
