The document summarizes key points about Christ the mediator from the Westminster Confession of Faith. It discusses that Christ, as both fully God and fully man, was chosen to be the mediator between God and man. As mediator, he fulfilled the offices of prophet, priest and king. It describes how Christ willingly took on human nature and perfectly obeyed God's law, suffering torments and death by crucifixion to act as a sacrifice for sins. It notes he rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, and will return to judge all people and angels at the end.
The document provides an overview of key theological concepts regarding the nature and attributes of God from the Westminster Confession of Faith. It discusses that God is one, unlimited being without passions or ability to change. God exists as three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) in one substance, as revealed in both Old and New Testaments. The attributes of God are described as either superlative and inseparable (such as being immense, eternal, and almighty) or moral and communicable in a limited sense to humanity (such as love, mercy).
- The document discusses the theology of sacraments according to the Westminster Confession of Faith. It addresses that sacraments are signs and seals of God's covenant that represent Christ and confirm believers' relationship with him. They also mark the distinction between the church and the world.
- Only baptism and the Lord's Supper are the two sacraments ordained by Christ to be administered by lawfully ordained ministers. The sacraments of the Old and New Testaments are essentially the same in substance, though differing in form. Grace is exhibited through the sacraments by the work of the Holy Spirit and not by any power in the sacraments themselves.
WCF Chapter 17 - Perseverance of the Saintssandiferb
This document summarizes the theology of the Westminster Confession regarding the perseverance of the saints. It discusses that those whom God has accepted, called, and sanctified will certainly persevere to the end and be saved. Their perseverance depends not on their free will but on God's unchanging love and election, the work of Christ, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Christians may fall into sin but will not fall away completely, as God will discipline them and restore them for preservation.
WCF Chapters 12-13 - Adoption and Sanctificationsandiferb
This document provides an overview of chapters 12 and 13 of the Westminster Confession of Faith regarding the doctrines of adoption and sanctification.
The chapter on adoption emphasizes that it is an act that makes believers children of God through Jesus Christ. It legally seals believers as members of God's family and gives them benefits like God's protection as sons.
The chapter on sanctification describes it as the work of God through Christ by the Spirit to transform believers and make them holy. It is an ongoing process that touches all parts of a believer but remains imperfect in this life. Believers grow in holiness through relying on Christ and the power of the Spirit amidst a continual struggle against sin.
WCF Chapter 21 - Religious Worship and the Sabbath Daysandiferb
This document provides an overview of the theology of religious worship and the Sabbath day according to the Westminster Confession. It discusses that worship should only be given to God as he has prescribed in scripture. It outlines the proper elements of worship including prayer, singing, scripture reading, and the sacraments. It also discusses that while places of worship were important in the Old Testament, under the New Covenant worship can occur anywhere as long as it is done in spirit and in truth. Finally, it affirms that the Sabbath is still binding for Christians, though the day of observance has changed from Saturday to Sunday.

The document outlines steps believers must take to prepare for Christ's return, which is described as imminent. It states that we must (1) grow spiritually through regular prayer, Bible study, and obedience; (2) strengthen relationships with other believers for accountability and community; and (3) continually share the gospel with non-believers through acts of service and compassion. Preparing also requires depending on the Holy Spirit's power, and getting one's personal life, family, and finances in order. The conclusion urges urgency, saying Christ's coming will happen very quickly with no time left for reflection once it arrives.
This document discusses the importance of understanding one's true identity as a child of God in Christ. It argues that many Christians live in bondage because they see themselves as sinners rather than saints. However, the Bible says that believers, through Christ, are forgiven of their sins and are saints. Understanding this identity in Christ is key to living freely according to how God sees us. The document encourages readers to declare who they are in Christ in order to overcome the devil's lies and live empowered lives.
This document provides an overview of the theology of good works according to the Westminster Confession of Faith chapters 16. It discusses that good works are only those commanded by God in Scripture, and that true good works can only be done by Christians through the work of the Holy Spirit. While believers' good works are imperfect, they are accepted by God through union with Christ. The document also notes that unbelievers' works, while sometimes outwardly good, cannot please God as they do not come from faith.
This document discusses the theology of the Westminster Confession regarding God's eternal decrees. It explains that God ordained all things that come to pass according to His wise and holy plan from all eternity. Some key points are that God predestined some people and angels to eternal life and others to eternal judgment solely by His grace and mercy. While a mystery, this doctrine glorifies God by showing His sovereignty and justice. The elect are called and kept saved through faith in Christ alone.
Session 1 What Is Identity And Why Is It So Foundational To Life Changereachtim
This document discusses where Christians should get their identity from. It begins by looking at passages in 2 Corinthians and Ephesians that say a believer's identity is found in Christ as a new creation. Other potential sources of identity like appearance, occupation, roles, and friends are incomplete. The document argues that identity determines behavior, so life change must start with believing who God says we are in Christ. Ephesians 2 is examined, showing that through faith in Christ, believers have been brought near to God, made fellow citizens with Him, and are being built together into a dwelling where God lives by His Spirit.
The document discusses chapters 14 and 15 of the Westminster Confession of Faith regarding saving faith and repentance. It covers several key points:
1) Saving faith is worked in believers' hearts by the Holy Spirit through the ministry of the Word, ordinarily preached. This faith receives, believes, and rests in Christ alone for salvation.
2) Repentance unto life involves seeing one's sins as offensive to God, turning from sin to God through Christ, and determining to obey God's commands. Both private and public confession may be necessary.
3) While faith and repentance are necessary for salvation, they are gifts of God's grace, not works that earn forgiveness. True repentance brings comfort
The document discusses what a person's identity is "in Christ". It provides several Bible verses that describe how through faith in Jesus, believers die to their old selves and are made new creations. Their lives are now hidden with Christ in God and they are united with Him in both death and resurrection. The old self has been crucified and believers now live by faith in Christ who lives in them. They have put off the old self and put on the new self created in God's likeness.
The document discusses the theology of marriage and divorce according to the Westminster Confession. It covers several key points:
1) God's pattern for marriage is a one-flesh union between one man and one woman. Marriage is intended for mutual support, reproduction, and preventing sexual immorality.
2) Christians should only marry other Christians, as marrying unbelievers or heretics would yoke them unequally.
3) The only biblical grounds for divorce are adultery or willful desertion that cannot be remedied. Divorce should involve a public and orderly process rather than leaving the decision to the individuals.
4) God wants the church and state to make efforts to heal marriages rather
Peter wrote this letter to believers in Asia Minor who were experiencing trials. He encourages them to have hope through God's grace and to pursue holiness. To do so, they must prepare their minds (gird up their loins of mind), be self-controlled, and set their hope fully on the grace that will be given through Jesus Christ. They are called to be holy as God is holy, which means being set apart and different. The pursuit of holiness begins in the mind and is motivated by and empowered by God's grace, not legalism or the idea that grace removes the need for holiness.
SFC - Clp talk 3 what it means to be a christianChristine Cayona
The document discusses what it truly means to be a Christian. It argues that Christianity is not just a religious system of beliefs, moral system of dos and don'ts, or social/humanitarian system. Rather, the essence of Christianity is union with God through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a relationship initiated by God's mercy and love, not by human works. In Christianity, believers become a new creation and participate in Christ's life. The goal is to seek God's kingdom and not worry about earthly things, as God provides for all needs. As children of God, Christians are brothers and sisters and their real citizenship is in heaven.
The document discusses the theological virtue of hope. It defines hope as desiring God's kingdom and eternal life through faith in Christ and relying on God's grace rather than human strength. Hope responds to humanity's desire for happiness, inspires and purifies our actions, prevents discouragement, and sustains us through difficult times by opening us to eternal joy. Christian hope is found especially in the Our Father prayer and is oriented toward God rather than other people.
The document outlines seven golden promises for joy from the book of Philippians: 1) Completion of the good work God began, 2) Clarity and guidance, 3) Physical transformation, 4) Peace of God, 5) God of peace, 6) Strength to accomplish all things, 7) Provision of all needs. It then provides biblical support and explanation for each of these promises. The document encourages believers to claim these promises and rely on God's strength as they pursue holiness.
Overcoming temptation and hard times in the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He was full of the Spirit when he began and he went through the temptation in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Grace is misunderstood by many people to mean that salvation can be gained freely without any effort on their part. However, God's grace is actually an extension of time and opportunity provided to humanity to prove themselves worthy of salvation by obeying God's laws. While grace is a free gift through Christ's sacrifice, it does not guarantee salvation unless that time is used to obey God. Grace was necessary because of humanity's fall into sin but it does not negate the requirement to follow God's commandments in order to gain eternal life.
Prayer is communicating with God through talking and listening. There are different types of prayer including communal prayer said with others (like Mass) and private prayer said alone (like reading scripture). The four main purposes of prayer are petition, adoration, contrition, and thanksgiving. Catholics should know important prayers like the Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, and Apostle's Creed. Prayer is an important part of the Bible as seen in passages like the Magnificat and Psalms.
This document provides an overview of the theology of justification according to the Westminster Confession. It defines justification as God pardoning sins and accepting people as righteous based solely on the righteousness of Christ imputed to them through faith. The document discusses that justification is by faith alone but accompanied by other saving graces, is a legal declaration by God rather than making one inherently righteous, and that those justified are eternally secure but can still sin and experience God's discipline. It also states that justification has always been by grace through faith alone for both Old and New Testament believers.
The document discusses the Holy Spirit and experiencing a life filled with the Holy Spirit. It describes how Jesus promised the disciples the Holy Spirit would come after He ascended to heaven. On the day of Pentecost, the disciples experienced the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues and boldly preaching. The document encourages seeking a similar experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit through prayer and asking God, in order to gain power, gifts, and a closer relationship with God.
This document provides guidance for sharing the gospel with someone who is spiritually unaware or seeking. It outlines seven steps: 1) focus your heart on Christ; 2) pray for opportunities and passion to share faith; 3) share your testimony and life; 4) ask about their beliefs and answer questions respectfully; 5) share the core truths of the gospel; 6) pray for God to work in their heart; 7) respect their choice to accept or reject and continue showing Christ through actions. The goal is to help people know Christ and become disciples who make disciples.
The document summarizes a youth retreat organized by Haley Keen for middle school students. It describes the planning process, which involved determining activities and Bible lessons with a facilitator. The retreat included icebreaker games like a scavenger hunt and relay races based on winter themes. It concluded with worship, communion, and awards. Haley reflected on learning about organization and perseverance from the experience.
This weekend we had a Reflection Retreat for our RCIA and this is what they shared. It is good material for anyone...to reflect on what calls you to your faith and to know that God is the one who is in control.

2) The family is described as the basic building block of society where human attributes are developed through autonomy, responsibility, tolerance, and trust.
3) Community is formed through shared values, worldviews, emotional bonds, and critical thinking between interacting groups of people, such as neighborhoods, professions, or virtual connections.
4) Philippine culture and values are shaped by indigenous Aeta influences as well as Indonesian, Malayan, Hindu, Chinese, Spanish, and American impacts, forming
Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality consists of the id, ego, and superego. The id operates based on the pleasure principle and seeks to satisfy basic desires, the ego mediates between the id and reality, and the superego incorporates societal morals. The three structures are often in conflict, creating anxiety, which the ego defends against using mechanisms like repression, rationalization, and displacement. Defense mechanisms distort reality to reduce anxiety from conflicts between the id, ego, and superego.

These slides are intended to explain Christmas to those who may be unfamiliar, such as international students. The perspective is from the Bible. Good for presentations.
1. Paul is writing to address false teachings in the Galatian churches that said Gentiles must follow Jewish laws like circumcision to be saved.
2. Paul argues that under the law, all people are imprisoned by sin, but through faith in Christ alone are freed from sin's power and made heirs to God's promise.
3. In Christ, distinctions of race, social status, and gender no longer matter - all believers are equal as God's children and heirs through faith in Christ.
The document discusses how the church in Corinth had lost its focus on Christ and instead became divided and immersed in immorality and idolatry. It asserts that all the church's problems stemmed from taking their eyes off of Christ. It then provides suggestions for how to refocus on Christ by making Him the central focus of the local church, evangelism, and individual Christians' lives rather than other people or activities. Members are encouraged to imitate and glorify Christ above all else.
This document asks a series of questions to help the reader evaluate whether they are truly living with Christ today. It prompts reflection on whether the reader has died with Christ through baptism, is living in harmony with other believers as part of Christ's body the church, and has crucified their old sinful self so that Christ lives in them. The goal is for the reader to understand what it means to have truly joined their life to Christ's so that they can follow him daily.
The document discusses what it means to call Jesus "Lord". It says that calling Jesus Lord involves recognizing that God, not ourselves, is the center. It means having the attitude or mind of Christ, rejecting others who claim false authority over us, and making Christ our ultimate commitment rather than anything else. Calling Jesus Lord was a radical statement for early Christians, as it implied Jesus was equal to or greater than the Roman Emperor.
This document discusses the Apostles' Creed and what it means to believe. It addresses the concept of "Radical Grace Theology" which claims sins don't need to be confessed or repented of. The document examines what it means to believe in the head, heart, and with actions. It provides background on the origins and purpose of creeds in summarizing core Christian beliefs and avoiding incomplete versions. The Apostles' Creed aims to remind believers of their connection to the early church community.
This document provides an overview and summary of Galatians 3:22-29. It discusses:
1) The problem in the Galatian churches with false teachers called "Judaizers" who said Gentiles had to follow Jewish practices like circumcision to be Christian.
2) Paul's argument that faith in Christ alone is what matters, not works or following the law, and that the purpose of the law was to show people their sin and lead them to Christ.
3) The key points of Galatians 3:22-29, which state that in Christ there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, slave and free, or male and female, and that all believers are children of God
The Council of Nicea in 325 AD and the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD were early ecumenical councils that helped define Christian doctrine. The document lays out foundations for change, including being raised with Christ so our lives reflect heaven's perspective, and being hidden and crucified with Christ so we put sin to death. It lists specific sins to put off, like sexual immorality and anger. Believers are to strip off these old habits like clothing.
The document urges putting on characteristics of the new nature, like mercy, kindness, humility and forgiveness. Wear
s the gift of salvation given on the same terms a birthday present? The Scriptures clearly tell us that the time will come when some Christians in the body of Christ will not endure sound doctrine. All of us ought to separate the precious from the vile, the truth from the error and sound doctrine from fables. We cannot delegate this responsibility to anybody else. To this end we have been freely given the written word of God that by the grace of God through faith in his name we might be lead into all truth through the Holy Spirit.
I hope this series of meditations will help the word of God renew your mind and that you will be ready for the appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ.
1) Paul warns that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not from following old religious traditions like circumcision.
2) Paul describes his previous religious devotion but now considers it worthless compared to knowing Jesus.
3) True faith means experiencing God's power through Christ and sharing in both his suffering and resurrection.

It explores what it means to truly know God through personal dealings with Him, involvement in one's relationship with Him, and experiencing His grace. True knowledge of God is mutual understanding between God and humanity. God knows His people intimately just as a shepherd knows his sheep. Christians are called to listen to God's voice and follow Him in response to His initiative to draw people into a saving relationship through Jesus Christ.
The document contains a passage from Jeremiah 31 describing a new covenant God will make with Israel where he will put his law in their minds and write it on their hearts so they will all know him. It then shares a sermon from C.H. Spurgeon where he argues that the proper study of God's elect is God, and contemplating the divine nature humbles the mind while expanding it and providing consolation. Spurgeon encourages devoting time to meditating on what is known about God's attributes and applying it to oneself in order to clarify one's vision of God and allow his truth to have its proper impact.
This document provides an overview and analysis of key aspects of understanding the Book of Revelation. It discusses:
- The book's intended meaning and time frame, noting it was meant to be understood by early Christians facing persecution.
- Two common approaches to interpreting Revelation (historicist and futurist) and arguments for understanding it in its original context.
- Important symbols and their meanings, either explained directly in the text or through comparisons to other Bible passages.
- Features like repeated themes of judgment, paired opposites representing good and evil, and the need to solve Revelation like a puzzle rather than view it as a mystery.
The document discusses salvation through faith in God and Jesus Christ. It emphasizes that salvation is a gift from God and not by works or observance of religious laws, so that no one can boast. Faith is shown through love for God and others by obeying God's commands to love him and your neighbor. God's grace and mercy, not human righteousness or deeds, are what lead to eternal life.
The document discusses the life journey of John Newton, including that he was born in 1725, went to sea at age 17, became a slave trader in 1744, underwent a spiritual conversion and became ordained as a clergyman in 1748 and 1764 respectively, wrote hymns in 1773, and opposed the slave trade later in life until his death in 1807 at age 82. It emphasizes his dramatic transformation from an "infidel and libertine" who worked in the slave trade to preaching the gospel that he had once tried to destroy.
This document discusses the biblical uses of the word "Amen" in three sentences or less:
The document explores different biblical references to the word "Amen", which is used to affirm that what was spoken or written is reliable, as well as its use by Jesus 75 times in the Gospels and by King David's advisor Benaiah to agree that Solomon should be king after David. It also mentions Jesus saying he is coming quickly and John's response of "Amen, come Lord Jesus" in Revelation 22:20.
The document discusses several biblical figures' acknowledgement of their sinfulness before God, including Isaiah, Job, David, a tax collector, and the prodigal son. These figures express feelings of unworthiness, ruin, and being unclean due to their sins. However, they also find forgiveness, atonement, or justification from God through humbling themselves and acknowledging their sin.
Jesus was cursed, rejected, oppressed, and shamed for our sins. He was scourged and crucified on the cross to redeem us, cleanse us from sin, and provide salvation. Through faith in Jesus as the Son of God, we can overcome the world, receive sonship with God, and live together with Him for eternity.
King Jehoshaphat of Judah faced a vast invading army. He proclaimed a fast and gathered the people to seek help from God. God assured them that he would fight for them. When the armies met, God caused the invading forces to turn against each other, and Judah was delivered without even entering the battle. The kingdom was then at peace as God had given them rest from their enemies.
The document provides biographical information about Paul, originally known as Saul. It describes that he was born in Tarsus and trained under Gamaliel in Jerusalem. It mentions that Saul took part in the stoning of Stephen and that he later had a conversion experience where he embraced Christianity and changed his name to Paul. The rest of the document focuses on Paul's missionary work, preaching of Jesus, theological focus on grace and faith, and his faithful service until his death.
The document discusses the concept of sin and forgiveness. It acknowledges that all people are sinners and have sinned. It references biblical passages about God forgiving sins and His provision of atonement and mercy for sinners. The document highlights that forgiveness is received through faith as a gift of grace from God.
The pervasiveness of Lying in today's World.pptxniwres
In our interconnected world, lies weave through the fabric of society like hidden threads. We encounter them in politics, media, personal relationships, and even within ourselves. The prevalence of deception raises profound questions about truth, trust, and the human condition.

Astronism, Cosmism and Cosmodeism: the space religions espousing the doctrine...Cometan
This lecture created by Brandon Taylorian (aka Cometan) specially for the CESNUR Conference held Bordeaux in June 2024 provides a brief introduction to the legacy of religious and philosophical thought that Astronism emerges from, namely the discourse on transcension started assuredly by the Cosmists in Russia in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and then carried on and developed by Mordecai Nessyahu in Cosmodeism in the twentieth century. Cometan also then provides some detail on his story in founding Astronism in the early twenty-first century from 2013 along with details on the central Astronist doctrine of transcension. Finally, the lecture concludes with some contributions made by space religions and space philosophy and their influences on various cultural facets in art, literature and film.
Introduction
Mantra Yoga is an exact science. "Mananat trayate iti mantrah- by the Manana (constant thinking or recollection) of which one is protected or is released from the round of births and deaths, is Mantra." That is called Mantra by the meditation (Manana) on which the Jiva or the individual soul attains freedom from sin, enjoyment in heaven and final liberation, and by the aid of which it attains in full the fourfold fruit (Chaturvarga), i.e., Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. A Mantra is so called because it is achieved by the mental process.

Lição 12: João 15 a 17 – O Espírito Santo e a Oração Sacerdotal | 2° Trimestr...OmarBarrezueta1
The Book of Revelation, filled with symbolic and apocalyptic imagery, presents one of its most striking visions in Revelation 9:3-12—the locust army. Understanding the significance of this locust army provides insight into the broader themes of divine judgment, protection, and the ultimate triumph of God’s will as depicted in Revelation.

Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.
3. Christian life is a many-faceted
relationship to Jesus Christ
• Through • These
• In prepositions
• Under indicate the
• With magnificence
• For
of being a
• To
Christian
• Like Christ
4. “With Christ”
• What reaction does that cause?
• Most think of heaven
• That's where we'll be when we're with Christ
• Gravestones: "With Christ, which is far better"
5. Jesus’ promise:
• John 14:1-3 NIV "Do not let your hearts be
troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me. 2 In my
Father's house are many rooms; if it were not
so, I would have told you. I am going there to
prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come back and
take you to be with me that you also may be
where I am.
6. Paul's desire:
• Philippians 1:23-24 NIV I am torn between the
two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which
is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for
you that I remain in the body.
7. Paul's confidence:
• 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 NIV Brothers, we do
not want you to be ignorant about those who fall
asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who
have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died
and rose again and so we believe that God will
bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in
him. 15 According to the Lord's own word, we
tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till
the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede
those who have fallen asleep.
8. Paul's confidence:
• 16 For the Lord himself will come down from
heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of
the archangel and with the trumpet call of God,
and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that,
we who are still alive and are left will be caught
up together with them in the clouds to meet the
Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord
forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other with
these words.
9. If we know the Bible, “with Christ”
makes us think of heaven
• By comparison, Christ’s presence with us here is
so feeble as to be thought of as an absence:
– 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 NIV Therefore we are always
confident and know that as long as we are at home in
the body we are away from the Lord. 7 We live by
faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, I say, and
would prefer to be away from the body and at home
with the Lord.
• Every Christian longs for the day when faith will
be sight with Jesus
• But not yet
10. Remember the Gadarene
demoniac:
• Mark 5:18 NIV As Jesus was getting into the
boat, the man who had been demon-possessed
begged to go with him.
– Wanted to go with Jesus, but couldn't, because he
had a responsibility on earth to tell
• Forerunner of Christian escapists, who want to
be with Jesus & out of the world
– They do not feel responsibility to tell others
11. Must be with Christ on earth before
we can be with Christ in heaven
• Like the Corinthians, many think old bonds are
eradicated & old responsibilities abdicated
• 1 Corinthians 7:20 NIV Each one should remain
in the situation which he was in when God called
him.
12. “With Christ” does not eliminate
relationships, it transforms them
• Jesus' command to make disciples was
accompanied by a promise:
• Matthew 28:19-20 NIV Therefore go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you. And surely I
am with you always, to the very end of the age."
14. Colossians 2:20-3:4 NIV
• Since you died with Christ to the basic principles
of this world, why, as though you still belonged
to it, do you submit to its rules: 21 "Do not
handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? 22 These
are all destined to perish with use, because they
are based on human commands and teachings.
23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance
of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their
false humility and their harsh treatment of the
body, but they lack any value in restraining
sensual indulgence.
15. Colossians 2:20-3:4 NIV
• 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with
Christ, set your hearts on things above, where
Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set
your minds on things above, not on earthly
things. 3 For you died, and your life is now
hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is
your life, appears, then you also will appear with
him in glory.
16. Four "with Christ" statements
• We died with Christ
– Colossians 2:20 NIV Since you died with Christ to the
basic principles of this world, why, as though you still
belonged to it, do you submit to its rules:
• We have been raised with Christ
– Colossians 3:1 NIV Since, then, you have been raised
with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where
Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
17. Four "with Christ" statements
• Our life is hidden with Christ
– Colossians 3:3 NIV For you died, and your life is now
hidden with Christ in God.
• We will appear with Christ in glory
– Colossians 3:4 NIV When Christ, who is your life,
appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
19. We have died with Christ
• Colossians 2:20 NIV Since you died with Christ
to the basic principles of this world, why, as
though you still belonged to it, do you submit to
its rules:
• No better way to indicate the end of anything
than to speak of its death
– Paul says the old, unconverted life is finished
– We are dead to sin and guilt
20. Familiar texts:
• Galatians 2:20 NIV I have been crucified with
Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.
The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the
Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for
me.
• Galatians 6:14 NIV May I never boast except in
the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through
which the world has been crucified to me, and I
to the world.
21. Familiar texts:
• Romans 6:3-4 NIV Or don't you know that all of
us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore
buried with him through baptism into death in
order that, just as Christ was raised from the
dead through the glory of the Father, we too may
live a new life.
22. We have been raised with Christ
• Colossians 3:1 NIV Since, then, you have been
raised with Christ, set your hearts on things
above, where Christ is seated at the right hand
of God.
• New life of freedom & forgiveness has begun
– Evidence of resurrection power in our lives
– Philippians 3:10-11 NIV I want to know Christ and the
power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing
in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11
and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from
the dead.
23. Our life is hidden with Christ in God
• Colossians 3:3 NIV For you died, and your life is
now hidden with Christ in God.
• Where is Christ?
• Seated at the right hand of God
• He has ascended, has been exalted and is
enthroned
24. As a man, Jesus had a hidden life
• Occasionally, the glory shone through in
miracles, transfiguration, etc.
• Ordinarily, he seemed quite ordinary
– People asked, "Isn't this the carpenter's son?"
– If they had identified him as the Lord of glory, they
wouldn't have crucified him
– People had difficulty understanding the paradox of
Jesus – God and man
• Now, he is hidden from public view
26. We look the same on the outside
• Physical features, tastes, temperament,
relationships are all basically the same
• Nationality, parents, friends & job still the same
• Something has changed on the inside
– We have a hidden life – calm confidence, serenity,
love, sensitivity, sympathy all begin to grow within us
– There's a growing control over evil in our lives
27. This because of our relationship
with Christ:
• Redeemed through Christ
• Accepted in Christ
• Living under Christ
• Others only occasionally get a glimpse of the
changes going on inside us
28. The reason for the changes –
Christ is our life
• Colossians 3:4 NIV When Christ, who is your
life, appears, then you also will appear with him
in glory.
• We will appear with Christ
29. Jesus is coming!
• His second coming will be different
– First coming in humiliation; second in glory
– First coming was incognito; second will be acclaimed
– Revelation 1:7 NIV Look, he is coming with the
clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who
pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will
mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.
• Our hidden life will be over & we’ll be seen for
what we are – glorified children of God
30. These four events are more than
historical – they are personal
• Jesus died
– We’ve died with him
• Jesus was raised
– We’ve been raised with him
• Jesus has been exalted
– We’ve been exalted with him
• Jesus is coming in glory
– We’ll be glorified with him
32. We have new ambitions
• Colossians 3:2 NIV Set your minds on things
above, not on earthly things.
• “Things above” – things compatible with the
kingdom of Christ – righteousness, joy, peace
• This is the same idea as Jesus expressed:
– Matthew 6:33 NIV But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will be given to
you as well.
33. We have a new standard of
morality
• Inconceivable that we’d go back to old ways
• Colossians 3:5-7 NIV Put to death, therefore,
whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual
immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed,
which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath
of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these
ways, in the life you once lived.
34. We have a new approach to
relationships
• No more abusive behavior
– Colossians 3:8-11 NIV But now you must rid
yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage,
malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your
old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new
self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the
image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or
Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian,
Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
35. In its place, embracing behavior
• Colossians 3:12-14 NIV Therefore, as God's
chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility,
gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each
other and forgive whatever grievances you may
have against one another. Forgive as the Lord
forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on
love, which binds them all together in perfect
unity.
37. As a Christian, say to yourself
constantly:
• I died with Christ to the old life; it's over
• I've been raised with Christ to new life; it's begun
• I've been exalted with Christ to God's presence
• I'm going to appear with Christ in glory one day
• This conviction has more power to transform us
than any other conviction in the world
• How can you be united with Christ in his death,
resurrection & ascension & in his future glory?
38. Romans 6:3-8 NIV
• Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into
Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were
therefore buried with him through baptism into death in
order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new
life. 5 If we have been united with him like this in his
death, we will certainly also be united with him in his
resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was
crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done
away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- 7
because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also
live with him.
39. Have you been buried with
Christ?
Are you living your life with
Christ?
