Purpose:
To develop an argument of definition by closely observing and analyzing specific media examples (as listed in the options below) that engage gender definitions. Students will practice drawing specific textual and visual details to support their assertions.
Topic:
This assignment asks you to look at how contemporary media defines us as a culture and/or specific subcultures and issues specifically as regards to gender. Visual and textual mediums communicate a great deal to the public psyche about notions of who and what we are and what we should strive to become. How we read and interpret these messages is based on our own subject positions—our own race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation and our cultural experiences, etc. Each of us is bombarded daily with messages regarding American ideals from a wide variety of sources, like family, friends, school, work, religion and the media. These messages often forward arguments of definition that shape and define who we are and what we value. While it's relatively easy to reject some of these messages based on differences of opinion as exhibited through generational, ethnic, racial, and gendered perspectives, etc., others are more difficult to ignore because of their insidiousness.
The options for this assignment ask you to examine the ways in which contemporary media engage definitions of gender and the extent to which they might send mixed messages about who we are and what we should value.
Writing Prompt: In a 1,000 word thesis driven essay respond to one of the following two options:
Option I:
Working from our readings and discussion threads on gender, analyze a single episode of the show Southland (TNT 2009-2013--starring Regina King as seen in the above image), Criminal Minds, or any CSI or Law and Order episode within the last few years. Closely observe the roles played, the interactions between male and female characters, and how the characters and settings are visually presented. Then write an argument of definition that assesses whether the show is ultimately more traditional or more progressive (non-traditional) in its depiction of gender roles. The first step will be to define traditional versus non-traditional (progressive) gender roles as you see it (the Aaron Devor essay in our textbook is a great resource to help define these terms). Your paper should not be a general overview or review of the show. Instead, you should include close analysis of character actions and behaviors in two to four key scenes from one single episode as support for your stance.

The author used the prose form of writing, in which the article has paragraphs only, but no sections. While there is a flow of ideas, this essay is not easy to read because of the extensive writing, which makes the reader feel overloaded with information. In addition to that, the document does not have any chronology of events, and the author does not state how he intends to write his ideas.
The central claim of this article is the fact that many people confuse human races. He holds that “race” is a biological aspect of variations in the human species, but the world takes it for a social construct of classifying people.
Lewontin holds that “As a biological construct rather than a social one, people cease to see “race” as a significant reality that characterizes the species of humans.”

Fourth, the genetic differences break down due to rampant migration and intergroup mating; although, it existed in the past, it is now widespread at a high rate.

Essay 4 is a persuasive essay. Your goal is to present a convincing argument on one of the prescribed topics by using outside sources to support your argument. You MUSTuse the movie, Crash, as your major source.
Genre/Medium: Persuasive/Argumentative Essay—Typed
Purpose:
Unlike an editorial, the persuasive essay is not merely your personal opinion about a topic, but an argument that provides scholarly evidence of research (i.e. various sources, interviews, quotes, and sufficient statistical data) to support your position. Because of the length and complexity of this project, it is essential that you choose a topic that you really care about, one that you truly want to learn more about, and one that you will be interested in writing about.
Format:
Your seven-to-nine paragraph essay must contain a concrete closed thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph. In addition to your introduction, three supporting paragraphs and conclusion, your essay will also contain a paragraph of opposition and a paragraph of refutation. You will use MLA documentation to write your paper and we will consult with each other about your topic before the final draft is written.
Audience:
This essay will target a scholarly audience. Therefore, your language and style should meet the intellectual needs of individuals who read on a collegiate level. Identity and Representation
Context and Description
When we are asked about our identity, often we describe it in terms of the groups that we belong to, such as a sports team, club or other kinds of social groups. We may also mention our school, occupation or a specific workplace. We may think of our identity in terms of our gender, ethnicity or nationality. Where we live--the neighborhood or type of residence--may also influence our sense of who we are. The languages we speak in those groups also shapes our sense of who we are and how others see us. When we encounter a member of groups other than our own, sometimes it becomes necessary to reflect on and explain the values, assumptions and practices of the groups we belong to in order to resolve conflicts and to facilitate communication. Joining a new social group may also challenge those values, assumptions and practices that come from our pre-existing membership in other groups. The purpose of this project is to explore how identity is shaped, negotiated, and represented in relation to our membership in various groups.
Write an analytical essay that explores your identity in terms of your own group memberships. For this project, you may focus on any of the following:
the complex construction of identity through membership in various (and sometimes conflicting/competing) groups
how you represent your identity in relation to the social expectations or stereotypes of being a member of a group (expectations vs. reality)
the tension or struggle you encounter as a member of certain groups (e.g., how you represent yourself to others from different groups)
how entering a new, possibly unfamiliar group (for example, moving away from home and/or starting college) affects the values and assumptions you brought with you
As you explore your ideas, consider the following questions: What social groups do you belong to? How are these groups categorized (social groups, organizations, athletic teams, ethnic groups, or religious groups; by nationality, gender, neighborhoods, or communities)? What aspects of the group memberships are negotiable? Which ones are fixed or difficult to change? What aspects, characteristics, or expectations, if any, of these groups overlap with one another? Do they compete with one another? How are these groups perceived by people who are not members of those groups? Are there stereotypes associated with a certain group or groups you belong to? If so, what are they, and to what extent do you see those stereotypes occurring in others or yourself? How do those stereotypes affect you and people around you? How do your group memberships affect the ways in which you communicate with others? How do your memberships influence how you relate to others or how others relate to you?

Be sure to tell the person that you are completing the interview as part of a class assignment and that the content of the interview is completely confidential (no names will be used). Significant life transitions
Memorable experiences
In addition to interview data, you may also obtain information from significant others, behavioral observations during the interview, and records (e.g. school reports, family albums, diaries, etc).
Part I:
Document the questions you asked and the participant’s responses. This is your interview ‘transcript’ that will be turned in along with your reflective paper.
Part II
: Write about 1,050 words reflecting on the interview. In your paper, include information on the following:
What were the most notable aspects of the interview? What topics did your interviewee respond strongly to and why?
What were the most surprising aspects of the interview? Did any of the interviewee’s responses surprise you? Explain.
What stood out as being most important in his/her life? Describe the interviewee's most significant or meaningful life events.
What life transitions did your interviewee discuss? Did he/she disclose any specific strategies for coping with difficult life transitions? Describe the interviewee's most challenging transitions.
Explain what you learned from this experience.
Use
the literature in gerontology, wisdom and successful aging to supplement your paper and support your points.
Include
at least three references from scholarly sources.
Format
your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
