What is Identity Theft?
Identity theft is the crime of obtaining the personal or
financial information of another person for the sole
purpose of assuming that person's name or identity to
make transactions or purchases.
The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as
many as 9 million Americans experience some form of
identity theft each year. However, that number is
subject to fluctuation as both crime fighting tactics
and the methods that criminals use to steal identities
evolve over time.
People who regularly check for identity theft warning
signs, such as strange credit card charges or new
accounts opened in their name without their consent,
are less likely to have their information

• Limit who you give your personal

• Limit personal information you carry
on you
• Limit information on personal checks
to your name and address.
• Limit what you leave in your
vehicle(purse, insurance cards,
laptop, etc)
• Limit having active credit cards.
Don’t
• Don’t keep account information
recorded on mobile devices
• Don’t write your Social Security
Number or telephone number on
checks
• Don’t write or store your PIN
number on your card or in your
purse or wallet.
• Don’t give out credit card numbers
or personal information over the
telephone.
• Don’t carry more than 2 credit cards
at one time.
