2. ACUTE HEART FAILURE
PRESENTATION OBJECTIVES
Define acute heart failure
Etiology of acute heart failure
Signs and symptoms
Complications of acute heart failure
Physiotherapy management of acute heart
failure
3. ACUTE HEART FAILURE
Acute heart failure is a sudden decrease
in output of blood from both ventricles
causes acute reduction in the oxygen
supply to all the tissues
Is the life threatening condition in which
the heart is unable to do its work thus
requires emergency medical care.
The heart can be still beating but it cannot
deliver enough oxygen to meet the body`s
needs
4. ETIOLOGY OF ACUTE HEART
FAILURE
1) SEVERE DAMAGE TO AN AREA OF
CARDIAC MUSCLES
The damage of the cardiac muscles can
be the cause of heart failure due to
ischemic caused by sudden occlusion of
one of the larger coronary arteries by
atheroma with thrombosis
5. Cont.. Etiology of acute heart
failure.
2) PULMONARY EMBOLISM
Pulmonary embolism causes pressure in
the right side of the heart to increase ,this
means the right side of the heart will work
harder than it should. Over time the result
will be the acute heart failure.
3) ACUTE MYOCARDITIS
This means the inflammation of the
myocardium muscles which can be caused
by viral infections, rheumatic fever or
exposure to radiation or certain chemicals
or medication.
6. 4) SEVERE CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA
The rapid heart rate doesn`t allow the
ventricles to properly fill with blood. As a
result ,the heart can`t pump enough blood
to the body.
When the heart beat is below than 60
beats/min, the heart cant pump enough
oxygen-rich blood to the body.
7. Cont.. causes of acute heart
failure
5) RUPTURE OF HEART CHAMBER OR VALVE
The valves prevents back flow of blood ,due to
their rupture can lead to lack of enough blood
supply to the body hence low oxygen supply
which can lead to acute heart failure.
6) ALCOHOLISM
Long term alcohol abuse weakens and thins the
heart muscles, affecting its ability to pump blood
,hence leads to lack of blood flow ,which can
lead to acute heart failure.
8. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Shortness of breath
Fatigue and weakness
Swelling of lower limbs and abdomen
Rapid or irregular heart beats
Reduced ability to exercise
Persistent cough or wheezing
Chest pain
Tight chest
Loss of consciousness
