This study examined the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in teaching statistics and its impact on student academic performance at Baliwasan Senior High School in Zamboanga City, Philippines. The study found that: 1) Students had an average academic performance in statistics, 2) Teachers had a low extent of overall ICT use in teaching statistics with only moderate use of spreadsheets, and 3) There was a statistically significant relationship between greater teacher ICT use and higher student academic performance in statistics.

2. One of the subjects offered in the Senior High
School of K to 12 Basic Education Program is
Statistics. Teachers teaching the subject are given
curriculum guide. In some schools, teachers are
provided with the teaching materials such as books
and teaching manuals. It depends on the teachers on
how to deliver the topics in the classroom. However,
there are some teachers who merely use chalk and
board to deliver the instruction in the classroom.
Despite of the millennium of high technology, some
teachers do not integrate technology in teaching
statistics.

3. In Zamboanga City, particular Baliwasan
Senior High School-ZNHS West has just started in the
school year 2006-2007. With the experience and
observation, teachers do not use computers in
teaching statistics although there are available
computers. Despite the fact that some of the teachers
are already exposed to the ICT, they do not
incorporate the use of ICT in their teaching, thus, this
makes the performance of the students very low.

4. It is for these reasons that the researcher
embarks on this study. In order to determine
the ICT Applications used in teaching statistics
and its implication on student’s performance. It
was to address the problem of consistently poor
performance of students in statistics .

The study focused on the ICT Applications used
in Teaching Statistics: Its Implication to Students’
Academic Performance.
The study utilized the students of Baliwasan
Senior High School who are enrolled in Statistics
during the second semester of school year 2016-
2017

7. Research Methodology
The study is quantitative type of research
employing survey method. It is quantitative because
this is believed or considered as the most appropriate
in order to find solutions to real problems faced in
schools and searching ways to improve student’s
success.

8. Respondents
The respondents of this study are the
students of Baliwasan Senior High School who are
enrolled in Statistics during the second semester of
school year 20016-2017. Using purposive sampling of
the Non – Random Sampling Technique and for easy
retrieval of the data, the researcher utilized 5 sections
with the range of 22 – 39 Grade 11 students as
samples of the study.

10. Problem 1: What is the academic performance of
Baliwasan Senior High School in Statistics?
The result revealed that GAS 11-A got the general
average grade of 87.78 which is average, GAS – C got the
general average grade of 85.57 which is average, HUMSS – 11A
got the general average of 87.34 which is average, TVL – 11
Food Processing got the general grade of 83.45 which is
average and TVL-11 ICT C got the average grade of 80.06
which is below average. Hence the overall mean of the
students’ performance is 84.84 which is average.

11. Problem 2: What is the extent of the teachers’
ICT application in teaching statistics?
The result revealed that teacher’s ICT Application by using the
Spreadsheet/Microsoft Excel has a mean of 4.06 which is high
extent. Also shown in the table, the teacher’s ICT Application by
using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences)has a mean
of 2.16 which is very low extent; and by using the Statistica, the
teachers’ ICT Application has the mean of 2.002 which is very low
extent. Hence, the overall mean on the teacher’s ICT application is
2.74, which means that it is low extent. This implies that the
students are only exposed to the used of Spreadsheet/Microsoft
Excel.

12. Problem 3: Is there a significant relationship in the extent of
the teachers ICT application in teaching statistics to the
students’ academic performance?
The findings show that the significant difference does exist in
the teacher’s ICT application by using spreadsheet/Microsoft
excel (F=2.751) with p- value of 0.030 , SPSS (F=3.277) with p
value of 0.013 and Statistica (F=3.478) with p values of
0.009 which are lesser than α = 0.05 level of significance; hence,
the posited hypothesis is rejected since there is a statistical
significant difference in the teachers’ ICT application in teaching
statistics to the students’ academic performance. The data
suggest that the ICT applications really affect students’
performance in statistics.
