Figure skating is an athletic sport performed on ice where individuals or groups perform spins, jumps, footwork and intricate moves. There are three main disciplines: men's and women's singles, pair skating consisting of a male-female pair, and ice dancing which focuses on intricate footwork performed together. Competitions are governed by the International Skating Union and include short programs with required elements and longer free skate/dance programs with more choice. Skaters wear specialized figure skates with toe picks for jumps and costumes that can be elaborate and expensive.
