Sport Term Trivia
A list of twenty unusual sports terms and their meanings from sports such as skiing, football, car
racing, baseball, tennis, golf, skating, billiards, fishing, mountain climbing, skateboarding, shooting,
horse riding and archery. Sport trivia is always fun, particularly when you learn something unusual,
fun or interesting to baffle your friends.
Corn Snow - Snow Skiing - A type of snow
conditions created by alternate thawing and
freezing. The snow forms into hard crystals
about the size (or a little smaller) than corn
kernels.Flea Flicker - Football - This is a trick
play in which a forward pass immediately
follows a lateral or handoff.Flying Start - Car
Racing - This is the start of a motor race where
the cars are assigned positions on the track and
then they speed up passing over the start line
at close to full speed. As the first car crosses
the start line an official standing next to the
track will wave a green flag to officially start
the race.Fork Ball - Baseball - A specialised
pitch delivered with the index and middle
fingers giving the appearance of a fork. When
done properly the ball will drop as it nears the
plate.Hacker - Tennis - An inexperienced tennis
player who has very little skill and
experience.Honor - Golf - The right of being the
first to drive off the tee. The player with the
lowest number of strokes on the previous hole
is given the honor on the next hole.Neutral
Position - Figure Skating - A position where the
whole body including arms, shoulders and hips
are square to the skater's line of travel.Nine Ball - Billiards - In this game the balls are numbered
one through to nine. The balls must be hit into the pockets in order. The winner is the player who
pockets the nine ball.No Man's Land - Tennis (and other net games) - The area on the court between
the base line and the service line. A player has great difficulty returning from this area. It is a bit too
far from the net to volley effectively and not far enough back to effectively use a baseline shot.Nose -
Skateboarding or Snowboarding - The tip of the board.Penholder Grip - Table Tennis - A particular
grip used to hold the table tennis bat. The paddle part of the bat is held between the thumb and
forefinger with the face of the bat facing down. The rest of the player's fingers hold onto the handle
of the bat.Piton - Mountain Climbing - A metal peg hammered into cracks in a rock face to help a
climber scale or descend the rock. On the head of the piton there is either an eye or a ring that the
climber's rope can be passed through.Quiver - Archery - A case used for carrying arrows. One type
of quiver can be slung across the archers back.Shortboard - Surfing - A surfboard designed for quick
changes in direction. The board is lightweight and is about six feet or 1.8 metres long.Straddle Roll -
Athletics - A high jumping technique where the jumper has one leg leading the jump and the other
trailing behind. The high jumper crosses the bar stomach down.Street Luge - Skateboarding - A style
of competition where the competitor lies down on his board stomach down and tries to go down a
hill in the fastest possible time.Tack - Horse Riding or Sailing - The horse riding equipment including
saddle and bridle etc. In sailing to tack is to travel in a zig-zag fashion into the wind.Troll - Fishing -
To drag a baited line behind a slow moving boat.Whitewash - All Sports - When your opponent gets
no score on the board.X-ring - Rifle Shooting - On a target used in competition the X-ring is a circle
within the bull's eye used to separate the winner from the rest of the field in the case of a tie. When
two or more shooters have the same score the shooter with the most shots within the X-ring is
declared the winner.
