Ice breakers
1. Ice Breakers & Songs
Purpose:
For a group to feel comfortable as well as familiar with each other. Breaks the ice between people
who have not met before. Creates an atmosphere that reduces inhibitions and increases
awareness.
Types:
1. Openers and Warm-ups: Used in any type of setting. They can be stimulating,
challenging, and motivating. They are most effective when used to begin a program,
prime the group after a break or when shifting the focus of the group.
2. Getting Acquainted: This category offers the opportunity for participants to get to know
each other in a non-threatening manner. They are ideal for starting workshops. They
usually volunteer general info about the participants.
3. Games and Brain teasers: These ice breakers encourage creative thinking and the
examination of basic ideas. These often offer a competitive environment by pitting
individuals or teams against each other.
4. Energizers and Tension Redcaps: These will shift the emotional nature of the group.
They are most effective when participants appear flat or anxious. Mild physical contact is
involved.
5. Feedback and Disclosure: These ice breakers exist for the purpose of getting to know the
group members on a personal level, these often deeply explore personal thoughts,
feelings and reactions.
In order to be a leader one must take risks whether or not they like it. Without people taking risks
in a group, no one would take the lead. It also encourages the development of friendships; you
have to open yourself up!
Three risk levels of Ice Breakers:
Low Risk - Involves everyone in the group, helps to forma base of trust among strangers and
eases the tension.
Medium Risk - When group members are still apprehensive about what others will think of them.
High Risk - Contains a small amount of people who have interacted with each other previously on
several occasions and feel at ease with each other.
Ice Breakers

Group Size: 8 - 10 people
Time: 10-15 minutes
Materials: A bag of M&M's
Process: Have each person sit. Pass the bag of M&M's around. Give explicit instructions to take
the amount of candy they want and not to eat them. After everyone has their M&M's, they have to
share on characteristic of themselves.
Trust Fall
Risk Level: Medium
Group Size: at least 2 people
Time: Depends upon the number of people in the group
Material: none
Process: Pair up participants. Let them get to know each other. Announce trust fall. One person
stands up, one falls backwards so that the other person can catch the one falling. Make sure
each person does it!
2. Hug A Balloon

Physical setting: wide area
Process: Split into an even number of groups. Give explicit instructions of the game explained.
Two people run to a destination point and receive a balloon and put it between them and pop the
balloon. After popping the balloon, have the couple run back to where there group is. First group
to have successfully popped all the balloons required will win the game.
Barnyard

Group Size: at least 15 people (Depending on the size of the group, divide animal sounds in
groups of 5, 10, 15 of each.)
Time: 5 - 8 minutes
Materials: Hand out animal sounds at registration by having it written on the back of the name
tags or on a separate slip of paper.
Physical setting: open space
Process: Use monkey, pig, dog, cat, horse, chicken, bird, duck, turkey, rooster, tiger, etc. Upon a
command tell everyone to make their specific animal sound. As they are making their sound, they
should form a group with the others making the same sound. When all the groups are formed the
members exchange names, school, something they like to do, etc.
Variations: Use songs instead of animal sounds (Mary Had a Little Lamb, Row your Boat, London
Bridge, ABC song, Twinkle star, Jingle Bells)
Intro Grapevine

Process: The first person in the group says their name and one special thing they like. The next
person introduces him/herself, states what they like, and repeats what the first person said. This
continues around the group until the last person introduces them self and repeats everyone else's
intro. Assistance can be given along the way.
Variations: Use their favorite song or animal instead of what they like, or their school name or a
word that best describes them.
Association Circle

Physical setting: Form a circle so that everyone can see each other easily.
Process: One person begins by stating his name to the whole group, using a word beginning with
the same letter describe how you feel. Example: I am John and I feel jovial. The person seated to
the left will go next and will first repeat what that person said and then add their own. Continue
around the circle. The last person will have to say everyone’s.

Process: Give each person a slip of paper. Have them write one interesting thing that they have
done or an interesting place they have been. The papers are collected and redistributed. Each
person must question the others to find the person who wrote the interesting event.
Kool Kids

Physical setting: Form a circle so that everyone can see each other easily.
Process: The leader stands in the center of a group seated in chairs in a circle around him. The
leader makes a statement such as "Kool Kids wear braces". If this statement applies to any
members of the group, they must stand up and try to find a different seat among those others.
The leader tries to take one of their seats and force someone else to be in the center.
Toilet Paper

Physical setting:
Process: Distribute rolls of toilet paper to the rows of people. Ask each person to tear off as much
paper as he/she wants and then pass it on to the next person. When everyone has finished,
collect the rolls. Then tell them that on each sheet they are to write one sentence about them self.
When everyone has finished, each person is to stand up and read what they have written. This
serves as an introduction to the other members of the group and generates some laughter when
someone has decided to take 30 sheets as opposed to someone who took one.
Bounce the Ball

Process: A soft nerf-type ball is bounded from person to person with the catcher holding the ball
while telling a brief history/highlight about them self. The comfort level is elevated because the
prop is comfortable and soft and a tension reliever.

Process: Volunteers from the group lie down in a circle with each person placing the back the
their head on the previous person's lap. The group them proceeds to say "HA". The first person
once, the second person twice, and so on till everyone has done it.
4. Honey Do You Love Me?

Group Size: up to 25-30 people
Time: 10 minutes
Materials:
Physical setting: Form a circle so that everyone can see each other easily.
Process: One person starts and picks an opponent. The leader walks up to them, kneels and
says "Honey do you love me?" The opponent then has to reply "I love you honey, but I just can't
smile"--without smiling! If opponent smiles he/she is out. If he/she doesn't smile he/she gets to
pick an opponent and play continues until there is one survivor. (The person who doesn't smile.)
Going on a Trip

Physical setting: Group members are seated in a classroom or in rows.
Process: The leaders says " I'm going on a trip and I'm taking.....", filling in the blank with a
creative choice. The first person in the row says, " " I'm going on a trip and I'm taking.....",
repeating what the leader said and then adding his/her own. Continue around the room till
everyone has added to the list.
Chair Dusting

Physical setting: Everyone is seated in chairs.
Process: Begin by asking everyone to please slide to the extreme right side of the chair. Hold it
there a minute. Now have them slide to the extreme left side of the chair and hold it. Now return
to the middle of the chair. Then say, "Thank you. I did not have time to dust off the chairs before
you arrived."
Broom Jump
Risk Level: Low
Group Size: 10 to 20 people
Time: 15-20 min.
Materials: broom
Physical setting: Open space
Process: Divide into two teams. Team members should stand two abreast. First couple must
each grab one end of a broom and run back through their team. Broom is held just above the
floor. Everyone in the line must jump over the broom. When the couple reaches the back of the
line they must pass the broom to the front of the line over their heads holding the broom
horizontally. No throwing. First team with the original couple back at the front of the team wins.
5. Passing the Coin

Process: A coin is given to someone in the group. The players do not know which person has it.
The leader announces that the one holding the coin will give it to the fifth person shaking hands
with him/her. As group members shake hands they must introduce themselves to each other.
Continue passing the coin in this manner for several times.
Add a Word

Physical setting:
Process: Students are divided into two teams. The teams will work at a chalkboard. A leader puts
a word on the board for each team. One person at a time must come to the chalkboard and add a
word to the sentence until all the team members have had a chance. The sentences that are
formed can be very entertaining.
The Scream

Process: Participants stand and close their eyes. They are told to breathe slowly and deeply.
Then all members of the group breathe in unison. Continuing to breathe together, they reach their
hands up as high as they can. Bring their hands down, jump up and down three times and then
scream as loudly as they can.
Tiptoe through the Tulips

Process: Participants stand on their tiptoes and walk about while singing "Tiptoe through the
Tulips." Then sing "walking through the tulips" and add appropriate movements, then "running"
then " stomping."
Machine

Physical setting: Space in center of room or at the front.
Process: One person goes to the center of the room and acts out the repetitive motion and sound
of a part of a machine. Others add parts to the machine, one by one, until the entire group is
involved.
6. Bunny Hop

Process: The leader explains to the group they will be doing the Bunny Hop steps to the song the
Farmer in the Dell. Repeat at least five times.
"The farmer in the dell" (kick right foot to the right two times, touching heel to the floor)
"The farmer in the dell" (kick left foot to the left two times, touching heel to the floor)
"Hi Ho" (hop one step forward with both feet together)
"the dairy-o" (hope one step backward with both feet together)
"The farmer in the dell" (hop forward three times with feet together)
Card Relay
Risk Level: Medium
Group Size: 10 to 30 people
Time: 10 - 15 min.
Materials: two decks of cards
Physical setting: space to set up two lines
Process: Divide the group into two rows of equal participants. The two rows of participants should
face each other and be an arms length away from the person directly in font o them. The team
consists of the people who are in the opposite line and diagonal from each other. (i.e. Team one
consists of the first, third, fifth person in row 1 and the second, fourth, and sixth person in row 2)
The first person in each row is given a deck of 52 cards. The first person passes one card at a
time to their team member diagonally from them who passes it to the third team member and so
one. No one may accept a card until they passed a card except the first and last team member.
The last team member holds the cards until all 52 are received. The winner is the first team to
collect all 52 cards. Any cards dropped along the way must be picked up by the person who
dropped it.
Marionette

Process: This energizer is intended to loosen up and relax bodies. Participants are to stand and
spread out so that each of them will have space in which to move freely. The leader explains that
the members will be imagining that they are string puppets. When the group members are in
place, the leader asks them to perform the following actions as they imagine a marionette would
do them.
• shake hands with an imaginary person
• do a dance step
• swim the back stroke
• flag down an airplane
• change a light bulb
• pet a dog
7. Newspaper Shuffle

Process: Group members form a circle. The leader gives each person a newspaper that is all in
disarray. They are to put the pages of the newspaper in proper order. The person to complete the
task first wins.
Variation: Make teams or groups that must work together to put together the newspaper.
Think Fast
Risk Level: Low

Time: 15-20 min.
Materials: object to toss
Physical setting: open space
Process: Members form a circle. A volunteer starts in the center of the circle as the leader. The
leader closes his/her eyes and keeps them closed. Members in the circle start to pass a small
object (tennis ball). When the leader calls out a letter the person holding the object must name
three nouns that begin with that letter within 5 seconds. If the member could not name three
nouns in five seconds, they move into the center and the object starts passing again.
Rhythm
Risk Level: Low
Group Size: up to 30 people
Time: 25 min.
Materials: chairs
Physical setting:
Process: Group members form a circle. The leader demonstrates the rhythm. Pat knees two
times with both hands, clap hands two times, and then snap fingers two times. Practice the beat
until the group is synchronized. One member randomly starts the game as the beat goes on, by
stating a category (like "Food"). The person to his/her right names an item like "broccoli" on the
snap part of the beat. On the next snap the next person to the right says a food item and so on
until someone can't think of one. If the participant can't think of an item in that category they can
say "Category" and the next person to their right calls out a new category. All responses occur on
the snap part of the beat.
Corners

Process: Have the group count off in fours. Send all the ones to one corner, the twos to another,
and so on. The leader will give instructions on what the members are to do.
• Skip to the opposite corner.
• High five everyone you pass as you walk to the opposite corner.
• Slide to the corner on your right.
• Duck walk to the corner opposite.
8. Getting to Know You

Process: Have the participants match up with others as you call out similarities. Each time they
move to someone they are to introduce them self.

Process: Sit on the floor back to back with a partner. Interlock arms. Try to stand up.
Knots

Group Size: Groups of 6, 8, 10, or 12

Process: Form a circle. Create a knot by all members placing their hands in the center. Grab a
couple of hands without holding both hands of the same person or of anyone standing next to
you. Untie the knot without breaking hands.
Spider Web
Risk Level: Low
Group Size: 10 to 25 people
Time: 15-20 min.
Materials: yarn ball
Physical setting:
Process: Begin activity by stating your name and something you like to do. Then, while holding
onto the end of a ball of yarn, toss the yarn to someone else in the room. This process continues
until all have shared and a web has formed. Now, reverse the process by stating the name and
activity of the person who tossed you the yarn, tossing the yarn ball back to him/her, and winding
up the slack as you do.
9. Cards
Cards with questions are picked randomly from a box. Delegates must answer the question
posed to them in a one or two sentence response.
If you were:
- a vehicle what would you be and why?
- An M & M what color would you be and why?
- A business owner what type of business would you own and why?
- A pen, what would you write and why?
- A box, what would you contain and why?
Individuality and Alike
Read the following characteristics; find someone who matches or someone who is the opposite
(as directed): When you match someone, introduce yourself.
