Definition
• The simplest way to think about Beacons is as a kind of
indoor GPS.
• Small pieces of hardware, about the size of a matchbox, are positioned at
relevant points, and exchange data with your smartphone or tablet.
• Beacons swap data using a new version of a technology which has been around
for about 20 years: Bluetooth, which consumers will remember largely as a
means of avoiding a lot of messy cables linking electronic devices, and those
earphone type mobile phones beloved of cab drivers and bouncers.
• Bluetooth always had its limitations, in part because it required too much energy
to be viable for mobile. So the Bluetooth consortium, which dreamed up
Bluetooth in the first place, went back to basics and came up with Bluetooth Low
Energy which is viable for mobile use.
• Unlike the original Bluetooth, BLE can be left on all the time without draining
your phone’s battery.
• Beacons is poised to transform how retailers, event organizers, transit systems,
enterprises, hotels, educational institutions, etc communicate with people
indoors 

Personalized services for an independent hotel
from chain offers.
• In a hotel you can go directly
on your mobile to access the
instructions of an object.
• For instance, you arrive in
your room, according to your
preference :
• if you check the TV you can
have the list of all the films
you can watch, if you check
the fridge you will have
information about the room
service, and all services about
the restoration such as special
offer or the menu of the day; if
you check the bed you have
the information about what to
to do in the city and all other
activities; in case you want to
visit and not stay in your room;
if you check the bath you will
obtain wellness & spa
informations, massage
packages etc.. if you check
the entrace door you will have
information about check in/
check out.
• This is general information but
you can differenciate you hotel
by putting a suprise on each
object. This means that by
checking any object in the
room you will be able to find
something inovative and
surprising ;)

What do hoteliers have to understand to use
Beacon tech without cyberstalking ?
• Beacon technology provides great feature
for the clients according their preferences,
however it’s important to integrate it
without violating guest privacy and falling
into cyberstalking is very hard to achieve.
• The benefits of this technology cannot
compensate the amount and nature of
information that the guests have to share
about themselves.
• Push notification could be also dangerous
because it’s possible guests find it
annoying and disruptive for their
experience in the hotel.
• From my point of view, the solution would
be giving guests the choice to turn off push
notifications.

How could the Sephora approach be
used effectively by Hotels?
• By giving clients the opportunity to see day to day
breakfast, lunch & dinner menu and the map where to
find the restaurant as well as info about the cuisine, chef.
• By giving clients information about the events organized
by the hotel when the customers are in the lobby
• By giving guests information about the items available in
the gift shops, sales and any kind of promotions or spa
offers for instance.
• By giving also information about activities, restaurants,
and what to do around the hotel
