iSense is an environmental monitoring and control system that relies on net-
worked but fully independent, microprocessor based units and on a central
system that stores historical information and provides additional processing
capabilities.
Each battery powered iSense node gathers information from multiple digital or
analogue sensors: humidity, temperature, magnetic field (hall effect), proximity,
gas or smoke detection, light intensity, weight, and many, many others. The
information gathered from sensors is analyzed and, according to its relevance,
it will automatically trigger an alert or an alarm or is just sent to the central
system in a completely unattended manner.
On the same manner, the central monitoring system can not only passively
gather information from the remote nodes, but can also send specific com-
mands to each individual node: decrease or increase the temperature by acting
on the air conditioning or turn it off completely if it’s not needed, turn off or on
the lighting system, lock or unlock a door and so on. Only your imagination is
