Savings through technology
Hydronic Savings Summary
Balance your
hydronic system
and cut electricity
costs immediately
Many hydronic and booster pumps
are oversized and operate against
valves that restrict flow. They often
use 30% to 50% more electricity
than necessary.
Follow these four steps to optimize the efficiency of your hydronic system:
Take advantage of AUDIT FUNDING
incentives to uncover the energy
savings potential for your hydronic
systems with the help of a
balancing professional.
Apply for RETROFIT PROGRAM
incentives to implement the
recommended balancing
improvements to optimize your
hydronic system.
Reap the rewards with no impact
on your facility and paybacks as
short as four months.

2. The RETROFIT PROGRAM provides
financial incentives of up to 50 per cent
of project costs to replace or upgrade
existing inefficient equipment with
high-efficiency equipment.
How many pumps do you have?
Each could be delivering big savings.
If you own or manage a commercial, multi-residential or
public sector property you likely have numerous hydronic and
booster pumps for your hot and cold water systems. If they
are standard fixed-speed pumps, they could be consuming
30% to 50% more electricity than necessary.
Apply for the incentives available through both the AUDIT
FUNDING and RETROFIT PROGRAM to upgrade your pumps
and achieve a potential payback in as little as four months.
Start with a hydronic balancing
professional or energy auditor
A qualified, experienced hydronic balancing professional can
isolate the electricity used by the motors on your pumps and
identify the potential savings achievable by upgrading them
with Variable Frequency Drives.
Under the AUDIT FUNDING program, you can qualify for
incentives of up to 50% of the cost of the audit to a maximum
of $5,000. You will receive a comprehensive auditor’s report,
which identifies cost benefits and prioritizes the implementation
of the projects.
Assumptions: duty cycle
18 hrs./day, annual usage
365 days/year, energy
cost $.10/kWh
We’ll work with you to apply for the
RETROFIT PROGRAM
The hydronic balancing professional’s report will provide you
with all the details of your current pump systems, which can
be used in your application for the RETROFIT PROGRAM.
We’ll help you through the pre-approval process to get your
project moving as quickly as possible.
Incentives are available for these projects. Talk to your
Toronto Hydro representative – we can help you through
the application process and maximize your incentives.
Remember, to qualify for the RETROFIT PROGRAM, it’s
important that your application is approved before any
work has started.
See the following example for potential savings achieved by
upgrading a 25 HP motor.
Benefits of a 25 HP motor with a
variable frequency drive
Assume pump speed is reduced by 20%, reducing
energy consumption by 50%
