Hungary has experienced a tumultuous history in the 20th century, first entering World War I alongside the Central Powers and later losing two-thirds of its territory following the Treaty of Trianon. The Soviet army then occupied Hungary until 1989, establishing another dictatorship until a revolt removed Soviet rule from the country. Hungary joined the European Union in 2004 after reestablishing sovereignty in 1991. Hungarian culture is reflected in its architecture, including the Eszterháza Palace and Museum of Applied Arts, as well as its classical musicians like Béla Bartók and Ferenc Liszt.
