POTTERIES (TANGRA)

About CESC
Kolkata has come a long way on the wings of power. Through
rapid growth and change during the world’s most eventful
decades. CESC Limited ,a RPG company brought thermal power
to India more than 100 years ago and supplies power to the city
Kolkata , serving 11 million population across it’s are of 567
sq.mt the peak load so far handledmore than 1300 MW and it’s
no of consumer crossed 3.2 million. CESC have now three
generating stations. They are Titagarh, Southern and Budge
Budge. Their capacities are (4x60MW), (2x67.5MW),
(3x250MW) respectively. CESC is not only a generating station
but also a power distribution company. It’s no of receiving
stations are 6. The no of 132 KV substation is 7.It’s distribution
station is around 115.The no of Distribution Transformers is
around 9000. Power is distributed for industrial, domestic and
commercial purposes. We all know that pollution is main
obstacle in way of power generation. CESC is so much
concerned about the environment that it has India’s most
environment friendly generating stations.
HT Main(Bengal Potteries)
The HT Main Office falls under the HT distribution
system area. HT means ‘High Tension’. The cables
used here are of voltage level 6 KV or above. The
maintenance and breakdown work is efficiently
undertaken by the skilled workers of various sets.

L.T. districts: 10, Distribution area: 567 sqkm – 6 commercial areas
L.T. districts:
1. Calcutta central district
2. Calcutta south district
3. Calcutta southwest district
4. Calcutta west sub-urban district
5. Calcutta Southern district
6. Calcutta northern district
7. Calcutta north district
8. Calcutta north sub-urban district
9. Howrah district
10. Serampore district
H.T. department has three parts:
1. Utility cell
2. Breakdown, network & maintenance
3. Construction cell
Detailed Report of Day 1
 I reported at Poddar Court at 9 am.
 There I was asked to go to B.B.D Bag 132KV sustation.
 In that substation voltage is stepped out in three levels 132/33KV,
33/11KV and 33/6KV.
 There I was introduced to distribution management(DMS)
software.This software depicts the single line diagram of power
system network.It shows the SLD of entire city
 DMS shows bus bars,transformers,feeder cables in single line
diagram.It helps to find out the fault location easily.If some fault
occur in HT then this command office is responsible to inform HT
main so that they can handle the fault.
 We also get to know about the layout of power system of CESC.
Mostly distribution system of CESC is Ring Main System and 95%
of it is underground.
Detailed Report of Day 2
 I reported to HT Main at Bengal Potteries,Tangra at 9 am.
 Mr. Pallav Kundu Sir gives the brief of different work done in their
office.He then asked me to go with the engineer to see the work
 On reaching the site,I got to know there was joining going to
happen and I got to know how to find the phase sequence using
diode and live line indicator.
 We connect diode in two phase(R & Y) at one end of the cable and
at other end with the help of live line indicator we got unique
combination for which current flow.In this way we found the
correct phase sequence of the cable
 I got to see the RMU which is used to make ring main distribution
system,meter box,oil circuit breaker.
 Then,we went to Khidderpore DS for removing the 33KV cable
from GIS.
 There I also saw 33 KV joining between single core XLPE cable and
3-core PILC cable taking place over khidderpore bridge.
 I saw the different steps involve in preparing the cable as well for
joining it.
Detailed Report of Day 3
 I reported to HT Main at Bengal Potteries,Tangra at 9 am.
 Mr. Mujahidul Islam Sir asked us to HT construction office at
princep street to see the termination of single core cable in the
transformer.
 On reaching the site,I got to see the termination of cable to the
transformer using flat thimble.
 There I saw the gas insulated switchgear,air cooled transformer
 Porcelain and rubber insulators I get to see.
 I understand the importance of body earthing.It is done for the
safety of operating personnel.Body earthing means connecting
the non current carrying part to ground.
Detailed Report of Day 4
 I reported to HT Main at Bengal Potteries,Tangra at 9 am.
 Mr. Pallav Kundu Sir asked me to go with the engineer to see the
work of termination of single core 33 KV to the GIS
 We went to khidderpore distribution station where termination
was to happen,it is a gas insulated substation.SF6 gas is use as a
circuit breaker in this substation.Its 132/33KV GIS.Before
termination engineer put the conductor to ground using the key.
 Here I get to know about the importance of neutral earthiing.
 Neutral earthing is done to avoid the floating neutral.As the load
is unbalanced due to this voltage of the star point is not
zero.Hence,the votage fluctuates if the load is connected between
this neutral and phase.To avoid it we earth the neutral point.
Detailed Report of Day 5
 I reported to HT Main at Bengal Potteries,Tangra at 9 am.
 Mr. Pallav Kundu Sir asked me to go with the engineer to BE
COLLEGE to see the cause of sound coming fom meter box
 We went to BE college metre room,engineer cut off the supply
from RMU with the help of switch
 Then,engineer open the box containing bus bar and check for any
voltage with live line indicator
 After that ,workers remove the tape from bus bar to see the
condition of it,it was found to be ok
 Then they remove the back cover of meter box and check the
physical condition of CT and clean with dry spray to remove any
moisture
 Then testing department perform the continuity test of CT and
VT,Megger was done to know the insulation resistance
 Finally,partial discharge was measured and after sound were
within safety limits ,supply was restored from RMU and different
metre readings were noted down.
Conclusion
I have completed LT Distribution System training
from Calcutta South District Office, from the period
27.01.2020 to 01.02.2020. I have learned the process
of detection of fault in supply lines, finding phase
sequence, testing of transformers,construction of
Straig joints. The training was very fruitful and
important as it helped me to gain practical
knowledge about my subject, which will help me in
future. I would like to thank the entire unit of CESC
ltd. who helped me to enhance my practical
knowledge.

  • 4. About CESC Kolkata has come a long way on the wings of power. Through rapid growth and change during the world’s most eventful decades. CESC Limited ,a RPG company brought thermal power to India more than 100 years ago and supplies power to the city Kolkata , serving 11 million population across it’s are of 567 sq.mt the peak load so far handledmore than 1300 MW and it’s no of consumer crossed 3.2 million. CESC have now three generating stations. They are Titagarh, Southern and Budge Budge. Their capacities are (4x60MW), (2x67.5MW), (3x250MW) respectively. CESC is not only a generating station but also a power distribution company. It’s no of receiving stations are 6. The no of 132 KV substation is 7.It’s distribution station is around 115.The no of Distribution Transformers is around 9000. Power is distributed for industrial, domestic and commercial purposes. We all know that pollution is main obstacle in way of power generation. CESC is so much concerned about the environment that it has India’s most environment friendly generating stations.
  • 5. HT Main(Bengal Potteries) The HT Main Office falls under the HT distribution system area. HT means ‘High Tension’. The cables used here are of voltage level 6 KV or above. The maintenance and breakdown work is efficiently undertaken by the skilled workers of various sets. Detailed Report of Day 1  I reported at Poddar Court at 9 am.  There I was asked to go to B.B.D Bag 132KV sustation.  In that substation voltage is stepped out in three levels 132/33KV, 33/11KV and 33/6KV.  There I was introduced to distribution management(DMS) software.This software depicts the single line diagram of power system network.It shows the SLD of entire city  DMS shows bus bars,transformers,feeder cables in single line diagram.It helps to find out the fault location easily.If some fault occur in HT then this command office is responsible to inform HT main so that they can handle the fault.  We also get to know about the layout of power system of CESC. Mostly distribution system of CESC is Ring Main System and 95% of it is underground.

Detailed Report of Day 2  I reported to HT Main at Bengal Potteries,Tangra at 9 am.  Mr. Pallav Kundu Sir gives the brief of different work done in their office.He then asked me to go with the engineer to see the work  On reaching the site,I got to know there was joining going to happen and I got to know how to find the phase sequence using diode and live line indicator.  We connect diode in two phase(R & Y) at one end of the cable and at other end with the help of live line indicator we got unique combination for which current flow.In this way we found the correct phase sequence of the cable  I got to see the RMU which is used to make ring main distribution system,meter box,oil circuit breaker.  Then,we went to Khidderpore DS for removing the 33KV cable from GIS.  There I also saw 33 KV joining between single core XLPE cable and 3-core PILC cable taking place over khidderpore bridge.  I saw the different steps involve in preparing the cable as well for joining it.

Detailed Report of Day 3  I reported to HT Main at Bengal Potteries,Tangra at 9 am.  Mr. Mujahidul Islam Sir asked us to HT construction office at princep street to see the termination of single core cable in the transformer.  On reaching the site,I got to see the termination of cable to the transformer using flat thimble.  There I saw the gas insulated switchgear,air cooled transformer  Porcelain and rubber insulators I get to see.  I understand the importance of body earthing.It is done for the safety of operating personnel.Body earthing means connecting the non current carrying part to ground.

Detailed Report of Day 4  I reported to HT Main at Bengal Potteries,Tangra at 9 am.  Mr. Pallav Kundu Sir asked me to go with the engineer to see the work of termination of single core 33 KV to the GIS  We went to khidderpore distribution station where termination was to happen,it is a gas insulated substation.SF6 gas is use as a circuit breaker in this substation.Its 132/33KV GIS.Before termination engineer put the conductor to ground using the key.  Here I get to know about the importance of neutral earthiing.  Neutral earthing is done to avoid the floating neutral.As the load is unbalanced due to this voltage of the star point is not zero.Hence,the votage fluctuates if the load is connected between this neutral and phase.To avoid it we earth the neutral point.

Detailed Report of Day 5  I reported to HT Main at Bengal Potteries,Tangra at 9 am.  Mr. Pallav Kundu Sir asked me to go with the engineer to BE COLLEGE to see the cause of sound coming fom meter box  We went to BE college metre room,engineer cut off the supply from RMU with the help of switch  Then,engineer open the box containing bus bar and check for any voltage with live line indicator  After that ,workers remove the tape from bus bar to see the condition of it,it was found to be ok  Then they remove the back cover of meter box and check the physical condition of CT and clean with dry spray to remove any moisture  Then testing department perform the continuity test of CT and VT,Megger was done to know the insulation resistance  Finally,partial discharge was measured and after sound were within safety limits ,supply was restored from RMU and different metre readings were noted down.
  • 11. Conclusion I have completed LT Distribution System training from Calcutta South District Office, from the period 27.01.2020 to 01.02.2020. I have learned the process of detection of fault in supply lines, finding phase sequence, testing of transformers,construction of Straig joints. The training was very fruitful and important as it helped me to gain practical knowledge about my subject, which will help me in future.
