Commemorative speaking, also known as special occasion speaking, gives speakers experience in one of our most
commonly used speech. A manuscript is used instead of an outline because the intention is not to be “informative” or
“factual”, but to use stylistic delivery skills that affect the audience more thoughtfully and emotionally. Manuscripts are
used for speakers who give speeches at weddings, funerals, graduations, anniversaries, and breaking-ground ceremonies,
to name a few.
Time: 4-5 minutes
Prepare and present a 4-5 minute speech that pays tribute to a person, concept, organization or institution.
Harsher penalties will be applied, up to a full letter grade, for going over/under time.

A Performance Task for AP Chinese
You are invited to join a Mandarin-speaking Toastmasters club in the Bay Area and give a speech in Mandarin about the movie "Raise the Red Lantern" and its significance. You have 20 minutes to write a speech in a Google Doc organized with an opening, main points, and summary using vocabulary from the textbook as needed. After writing, you will have 10 minutes for peer evaluation and editing. Constructive Response: Write a speech
- 1. Constructive Response for high school Mandarin Level 3 Prompt: You will be attending an overnight Chinese camp next weekend. You are asked to prepare for a speech in Mandarin to share with the participants at the camp fire. Write a speech introducing yourself in Chinese. Your speech may include, but not limit to, personal information, interests and/or anything you will like to share with the class. Talk about your home language and your experience in learning Chinese. Describe an unforgettable moment/experience in your learning of Chinese, whether it be funny, accomplished, frustrated or miserable. Describe your goals of learning Mandarin. Remember to begin and end your speech appropriately. Task completion, organization, language use, elaboration and accuracy will be assessed. Write 120 – 180 characters. Use pinyin when you do not know how to write the characters. Finish the task in 25 minutes.
