‘The Resignation’ is a short story written by the famous Indian writer
Munshi Premchand. This short story is a real extension of the theme of
dignity in work place. It tells us about the employer-employee relationship
and how far the employee is bound to the employer. Lala Fatehchand was a
poor clerk with more control over himself. His name meant winner. But the
bitter experiences in his life proved that he is Haarchand means loser. He
had faced only set backs and disappointments in life. He had no sons ;only
three daughters. He had very little money but had a heart of gold. He was
kindness and tolerance personified. He was cheated by many and he had
not one true friend with whom he could share confidences . He was poor in
health. He would go to office at nine and return home at six. He had no
knowledge about what was happening in the out side world. He had no
interest in arts, sports literature ,cinema.
