America has long been a nation of innovators. The United States is the birthplace of the Internet, which today connects three billion people around the world. American scientists and engineers sequenced the human genome, invented the semiconductor, and sent humankind to the moon. And America is not done yet. For an advanced economy such as the United States, innovation is a wellspring of economic growth. While many countries can grow by adopting existing technologies and business practices, America must continually innovate because our workers and firms are often operating at the technological frontier. Innovation is also a powerful tool for addressing our most pressing challenges as a nation, such as enabling more Americans to lead longer, healthier lives, and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Threats to mobile devices are more prevalent and increasing in scope and complexity. Users of mobile devices desire to take full advantage of the features
available on those devices, but many of the features provide convenience and capability but sacrifice security. This best practices guide outlines steps the users can take to better protect personal devices and information.

Editor's Notes
HR-related e-business – or any inter-company exchange of HR data – requires an agreement among participants about how the transaction or data exchange will be accomplished. Today, most HR decision makers, similar to our hypothetical toaster shopper, do not include standards as part of the criteria they use in procuring HR information solutions. Consequently, most HR information solutions require expensive custom integration before they become truly productive. Research shows that the upfront costs of software account for only 30 to 40 percent (or less) of the total cost of implementing HR information solutions. Discovery, analysis, custom interface development, and ongoing maintenance account for the other 60 to 70 percent of many HR information solution implementations. Data interchange standards can dramatically reduce the amount of expensive customization required to make implementations of HR solutions productive. The HR-XML Consortium's data interchange standards provide flexible, extensible templates that can readily be used to integrate disparate systems. Without standards, ad hoc data interchange formats must be developed or employers may become locked-in to a proprietary format provided by their vendorHR-related e-business — or any inter-company exchange of HR data — requires an agreement among participants about how the transaction or data exchange will be accomplished.
The HR-XML Consortium is a worldwide, independent, non-profit organization dedicated to developing and promoting standard XML specifications to enable e-business and the automation of human resources-related data exchanges. The mission of the HR-XML Consortium is to spare employers and vendors the risk and expense of having to negotiate and agree upon data interchange mechanisms on an ad-hoc basis. By developing and publishing open data exchange standards based on Extensible Markup Language ("XML"), the Consortium provides the means for any company to transact with other companies without having to establish, engineer, and implement many separate interchange mechanisms. What Progress to Date The HR-XML Consortium was founded in December 1999 and has made swift progress since. The Consortium’s work continues, but thus far it has published data interchange specifications for the following areas: • Recruiting and staffing (job postings, resumes, and candidate information); * New Hire • Benefits enrollment; * Assessments • Payroll deduction requests; • Post-payroll reports of benefit contributions; • Time and expense capture and reporting; * EPM • Screening & Background checks; and • Employee stock options/stock purchase plans. Indicative Data Competency In addition, the Consortium has published a suite of specifications known as Staffing Industry Data Exchange Standards (SIDES). SIDES is designed to support the procurement of temporary staffing. Our members determine which standards are needed and what those standards will look like. 3. Major ERPs, Niche companies, Standard orgs such as ACORD (insurance), OAGIS (cross domain) are involved with our organization. Including HR Industry Organizations such as SHRM, IHRIM, NABPS 4. Global with strongest participation in EU countries, Canada and North America. Participants from Japan, China, India Some newer projects on the horizon include: Job Boards (Position Opening, Candidate transaction rules) Compensation – plan for Jan/Feb investigative call Drug Testing – plan for 2011 project
HR-XML is committed to the development and promotion of our specification, but being apart of the organization is more than that. HR-XML dedicates time and resources to ensure our community has the resources and implementation assistance you need to successfully integrate. Certification is a great example, our certification process offers the tools and resources you need to ensure and promote to your customers and partners that your organization has successfully adopted the HR-XML standards. HR-XML is not all technical – we are a global community, with a collective passion for our industry and technologies. Networking is an important part of this community, through online communities such as our member forums and linked-in groups. And events and meetings, like these and through participating in our workgroups – perhaps as a volunteer. This value is delivered through tools and resources focused on business optimization, through data exchange, knowledge transfer and professional development amongst the HR-XML Community. And, these tools are made available 365 days a year through multiple channels, leveraging technology-based and face to face venues.
Some of the potential benefits of becoming a Consortium member are: • Eligibility to propose and vote on Consortium standards • A higher profile with investors and customers from being affiliated with technology (XML-enabled e-business) supported by Microsoft, IBM, Sun, Oracle, PeopleSoft, SAP, and other leading technology firms • Access to vital information on how you can use XML and related technologies to reduce costs, improve customer service, assure quality, and build innovative new product offerings • Reduced costs through shared research, development, and testing of XML vocabularies • Increased visibility from HR-Consortium press releases, links on the Consortium's Web site (hr-xml.org), and from Consortium activities • Complimentary or discounted attendance to HR-XML technical meetings and the Global Partnering and Integration Summit. • Discounted fees for HR-XML Certification of your product or solution. • Access to Members-Only section of HR-XML Consortium web site including training materials, working drafts, implementation tips, and other materials developed by the Consortium. • Priority consultation and training on HR-XML standards and best practices. • Priority consideration on standards enhancements and maintenance requests.
