Super-finishing or CASF is a process that produces a very smooth finish on metal surfaces to reduce contact stresses and friction. It works by applying a reactive chemistry in a vibratory machine along with ceramic media to create a soft coating on the peaks and valleys of a component's surface. The rubbing motion removes micro layers of metal from the peaks, leaving a mirror-like surface without affecting the component's integrity or dimensions. This super-fine finish improves components' performance across many industries by mitigating the effects of friction, heat, vibration and fatigue.
INTRODUCTION: The Turbo-Finish process (also referred to as Turbo-Abrasive Machining )imparts beneficial compressive residual stress to edges and surfaces. and as all critical features of the part are processed simultaneously, it can produce a stress equilibrium throughout the entire part. One of the signature advantages of the process is that it is capable of producing peening like metal surface improvement effects, while simultaneously developing isotropic surfaces and deburring and edge-contouring sharp edged features This combination of edge and surface effects can help extend part life on components by mitigating crack propagation.

GMT started manufacturing lapping & polishing machine in 1971. It was built for in-house use and until then hand lapping process was used for finishing surface plates. Critical parts for our workholding devices required a finishing and buffing machine. There was demand in the market for valve lapping and lapping plates. Since GMT had a captive ferrous foundry, castings for lap plate and lapping machine were easier to source.
Since then GMT has become one of India's largest lapping machine manufacturers and suppliers with over 350 installations throughout India mainly to the valve and pump industry. INTRODUCTION: Turbo-Finish technology (also referred to as Turbo-Abrasive Machining) is a dry, high-speed spindle finishing process that utilizes abrasive fluidized bed technology, and high speed part rotation to develop extremely rapid and uniform edge and surface conditioning on aerospace, automotive and industrial parts. Polishing, deburring and edge radiusing are accomplished anywhere that the media can access. This finishing technology can develop isotropic surface finishes s while developing consistent round edges on any exposed sharp edged features.

Experimental Study on Surface Roughness by Using Abrasive ParticlesIJERA Editor
New advancement of technology and never satisfying demands of the civilization are putting huge pressure on the natural fuel resources and these resources are at a constant threat to its sustainability. Surface finish has a vital influence on functional properties such as wear resistance and power loss due to friction on most of the engineering components. Voltage, mesh number, revolutions per minute (rpm) of electromagnet, and percentage weight of abrasives has been identified as important process parameters affecting surface roughness. The experiments were planned using response surface methodology and percentage change in surface roughness (ΔRa) was considered as response. Analysis of experimental data showed that percentage change in surface roughness (ΔRa) was highly influenced by mesh number followed by percentage weight of abrasives, rpm of electromagnet, and voltage. The process has been investigated extensively in the finishing of cylindrical surfaces. The surface finish was found to improve significantly with an increase in the grain size, relative size of abrasive particles vis-à-vis the iron particles, feed rate and current. Super finishing is a micro-finishing process that produces a controlled and smooth surface condition on work pieces. It is not primarily a sizing operation, its major purpose is to produce a surface on a work piece capable of sustaining uneven distribution of a load by improving the geometrical accuracy. The wear life of the parts micro finished to maximum smoothness is extended considerably. According to the design of experimentation, mathematical model for Lapping operation on advance ceramic material is proposed. In order to get minimum values of the surface roughness, optimization of the mathematical model is done and optimal operation of the examined factors is going to be determined. The obtained res

A conventionally produced surface (turned, milled,
ground, EDM) is typically Gaussian in nature, that is,
the peak and valley distribution is pretty much equal
in height. This type of surface can be very unstable and
unpredictable when wear and load bearing are considered. The images in Figure 1 demonstrate this type of
surface.
There are many ways to produce plateaued surfaces.
They are varied in approach but all have the ability to
control the surface peak characteristics separately for
the valley characteristics. Methods that are used to improve surfaces for performance and increased service life include centrifugal barrel finishing, turbo-abrasive machining (aka Turbo-Finish) and isotropic micro-finishing with vibratory finishing equipment. CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

HPSF Super-Finishing
1. WHAT IS
SUPER FINISHING?
Wherever metals come into contact with each other contact stresses and friction occur.
Both these conditions regulate and reduce the performance and compromise the design
of the component. Super-finishing or CASF (Chemically Accelerated Surface Finishing) is a
means of regaining those losses by producing a superfine finish where it is most needed.
The process is carried out in specially designed vibratory finishing bowls and or
tub/trough machines. These machines are utilised with high density, non-abrasive
ceramic media and two specially formulated metal finishing compounds.
The unique and significant feature of the process is the surface levelling/smoothing
mechanism utilised to achieve the surface finish. A reactive chemistry is used in the
vibratory machine in conjunction with the media. When introduced to the vibratory
machine this chemistry produces a stable, soft conversion coating across the asperities
(peaks and valleys) of the components. The rubbing motion across the components
developed by the machine and media effectively wipes soft conversion coating off the
‘peaks’ of the parts surfaces, thereby removing a micro-layer of metal. After this continual
process is complete, the conversion coating is wiped off one final time using a neutral
soap to produce a mirror like surface. This process does not affect the integrity of the
parts either structurally or dimensionally and any very sensitive bearing areas etc. can be
effectively masked if required prior to super-finishing.
