Some tips on how to start a radio show

1. Radio Programme about

2. Topic questions
What angle is more important or relevant
to my community/listeners?
What does our community know
about the topic already?
What do we think our
listeners want to know?
What do we want our listeners to come away with
once they have listened to our show?

3. Producction Schedule
PRE-PRODUCTION: Choose a location that is easy for
everyone to get to and discuss and concentrate. Decide on
an angle and allocate roles to people in your team.
PRESENTER – PRODUCER
RESEARCHER - REPORTER
PRE-PRODUCTION: Planning the show. Date, Time and
who you want to interview.

4. Production
Scripting: Who and how long?
Teacher’s check
Rehearse pronunciation

5. Production
Run through the show together as if you were on air.
The hosts practice how to voice
the script, the sound engineer
gets to know sound levels,
when to play music and the
radio features, (This will allow
you to see where there are
things that need to be moved
around or changed.)
Organize a back up plan
(like music, facts and
figures, news) in case
something goes wrong in
studio.

6. On air
You’ve done all the hard work, now run with it and have
fun! Also remember your back-up plans in case anything
goes wrong.

7. Post-Production
Listen back and assess the show: what went right and
wrong? How can you improve the next show from what
you have learnt?
