1. Crop phoner pics like you normally would (400x500 size).
1) In the computer, go to: C:UsersmastercontrolVideosOn the Phone Template CS5 (or CS6,
depending on the computer you use). Double-click to open the After Effects (also known as
AE) project.
2) On the left side of the screen is your Project window. If you don’t have a pic to use for the
phoner, skip steps 3-4. Locate the Replaceable Image Placeholder.tiff file.
3) L-click to select the Placeholder.tiff and then R-click to bring up the footage menu. Hover the
cursor over the triangle to the right of “Replace Footage” to open up the submenu. Select the
“File…” option (you can also use the shortcut of Ctrl+H to get directly to this option).
4) Find your pic and click “Open.” Your pic has now taken the place of the Replaceable Image
Placeholder.
2. 5) At the bottom L-side of the screen should be your compositions and render queue. Look for
the composition that says “Phoner with Pic” (if you don’t have a pic, use the “Phoner - no pic”
comp). Select it using the cursor.
6) Now that the “Phoner with Pic” composition is open, the only layers visible are the Name,
Position, and Company/Organization text fields. Select the Name text field using the cursor.
7) Go up to the Tool Bar Menu at the top of the screen and locate the tool that has a “T” for its
symbol. This is the Text Tool and allows you to create new text as well as edit pre-existing text
fields.
8) Now that you’re in Text mode, over the text icon over the Name text field in the Preview
window. Highlight the text.
9) Type in the person’s name. Do the same for the position and company (if applicable).
10) This composition is done. In the Top Left Menu, select the Composition Menu and select “Add
to Render Queue.”
3. 11) Select “Render Queue” in the Composition window near the bottom left-side of the screen.
4. 12) The Render Settings are fine as they (either Best Results or Quicktime [H264]). We need to
change the Output Module. Click on “Lossless.” Have the settings as below.
13) Back in the Render Queue, change the Output To by selecting “Phoner with Pic.” The naming
convention for all animated phoners is First Name, then Last Name, and end it with Phoner. In
this instance, this phoner would be “Napoleon Dynamite Phoner.” Save it to the desktop.
14) On the bottom right side of the render queue is the “Render” button. Press it to render out
this animation.
15) Once the animation is complete, close out After Effects. DO NOT SAVE THE PROJECT!! Press
the “Don’t Save” button.
5. 16) Find your animation on the desktop. Drag and drop it into NewsDrop.
17) Let News know what you called it and where it is currently.
18) Give yourself a high-five…good job.
