How to introduce a speaking task?
UNIT 2
 Your speech will need an introduction. Your
introduction is the first chance you are going to have
to make a good impression on your listener, so make
it solid, quick and concise.
 Here are some ways to come up with an effective
introduction.
1. Clearly expressing purpose on your response
Purpose
 Any speaking task usually requires you to do one of
the following:
a. present your opinion on an issue
b. explain facts on a lecture or reading
c. summarize someone else’s position
d. describe something of importance to you
Step 1: Decide What Your Purpose Is
 Take a moment to decide what your purpose is,
otherwise you will not be able to communicate it
effectively. As you have seen there are four types of
tasks that you would encounter in this course.
Step 2: State the Topic (thesis or main idea)
 For speaking tasks that ask you to present your
opinion or describe something personal to you, use
the following introductory phrases:
I believe I think I feel
My view is My opinion is My preference is
 After each of these statements, you will need to mention
the topic and whatever example you are going to use.
 For example, if you were asked to Describe a job that
you have held, and explain why it was important. Your
first sentence could be:

introductory statement topic
at a library.
specific example or controlling idea
 State your topic in a clear, direct way.
 Notice that in opinion questions there is no right or
wrong answers. Your purpose is to convince the
listener that your position is correct, whatever your
position is.
 For speaking tasks that require you to summarize
someone else’s opinion or to explain facts, the
following introductions are appropriate:
This person believes that This person holds that
This person argues that This person’s view is that
This person’s point is that The lecture stated
The reading presented The reading stated
The lecture offered
 After each introductory statement, fill in what the
topic and position is. For example, if a task asks you
to summarize facts from a reading. Your response
could be like this:
The reading presented facts about ……..
topic
Step 3: State What or Why
 For speaking tasks that ask your opinion, you will
have to state why you believe something. For
speaking tasks that require you to summarize
someone else’s opinion or to explain facts, you will
have to say what her or his reasons are. Use the
following phrases to indicate why and what:
Because The reasons Due to For
 Once you put it altogether. Your introduction should
look like this.
I think the most important job I’ve had was working at a
library. I believe that because I met many interesting
people at this job.
 Remember that your introduction should be brief
and to the point.
