• About 136 million
  people worldwide
  speak French as
  their mother
  tongue (about 2%).
  Around 190 million
  people speak
  French as a second
  language (that's a
  bit less than
  3%, 2.8) and an
  additional 200
  million speak it as
• The French pronunciation is
  entirely different from how
it is written, which makes it
  quite challenging to learn.
  Our university has an
  independent and efficient
  department for French, with
  students learning it as their
  first language or optional
  second language. There are
  options for doing
BA, MA, M.phill, Ph.D, COP, DO
• Hence we, Harish, Mahendra, Priyanka and
Meera, students of B.A English, conducted a
   survey of 15 people:
Manoj( 2nd year BA French)
Indranil( optional French)
Nagendra(3rd year BA French)
                                   Navneet(MA French
Pratap(1st year BA French) previous)
Vijay(3rd year BA French) Divyanshu(2nd year BA
                                   French)
                                   Yogesh(2nd year BA
                                   French)
                                   Firoz(2nd year BA French)
                                   Nimisha(2nd year BA
                                   French)
                                   Babitha(1st year BA
                                   French)
                                   Richa(1st year BA French)

X axis No of people who:

A Watch French movies
B Speak with French natives

C Write poems or stories in French

D Read books in French

E Translate

F Listen to music

H Write and memorize words

I Draw word pictures

J Online exercises and exams

K Refer dictionary

L Conduct group studies
• A group of fifteen students who are enrolled in various
courses of French were selected and interviewed from our
University. All these students made clear cut statements on
how best to approach French language. aLL of the
statements stressed the importance of using the language,
a majority of students pointed to the significance of
watching movies and writing and memorizing words. 80%
agreed that speaking with the natives and online
exercises/exams helps. More than half of the people
mentioned that listening to French music is an effective as
well as entertaining way of grasping the language. 30% -
60% of the responses were in favour of translation and
group study. Though we were anticipating interesting
responses on the method of using pictures and writing
stories/poems, none showed interest. We even got some
innovative methods of learning like reading online
newspapers and listening to French FM.
Classifications
• Group 1- use of language
• Speaking with French natives
• Writing poems/stories
• Translating
• Group 2-learning the language
• Reading books in French
• Practicing inf ront of mirror

• Attempting online exercises and exams
• Referring the dictionary
• Conducting group studies
• Group3- personal factors

• Drawing word pictures
Conclusion
• We were also able to gather additional methods
followed by a few students. Three of them
suggested that watching movies with French
subtitles and practicing with people having a
good accent had helped them. In the case of
books and music the tactic that they opted was
starting with comics and rhymes. Hence, being a
successful French learner requires both practice
and passion yet all the respondents unanimously
agreed that it totally worth it
