The ICT sector can boost energy efficiency and enable emission reductions in a number of ways:
• Standardize
• Monitor
• Account
• Rethink
• Transform
Energy efficiency measures contribute to an organization’s sustainability goals, such as tracking and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But if the data is trapped within the building management system, executive level decision-makers may not find it.
The underlying principle that drives the connections between smart technology, sustainability, and efficiency is the access to better information that enables more effective decision making, which in turn results in more efficient operations and fewer resource requirements.

The Zero Emissions Ferry Concept is for a series of innovative and cost-effective shuttle ferries featuring zero or low emissions. The design focuses on high energy efficiency with low resistance, both above and below the water line. Ferries are designed to run entirely on batteries or in a battery-engine hybrid configuration where the fuel options are liquefied natural gas (LNG) or biofuel. In plug-in operation, the fuel consumption is reduced by 100% compared with conventional installations. The concept also features Wärtsilä’s new wireless inductive charging system, which eliminates physical cable connections, thus reducing wear and tear and enabling charging to begin immediately when the vessel arrives at quay. The design also encompasses a complete electrical and automation package and a complete bridge control system.
Electrical plug-in operation reduce operational cost and zero emission can be achived with renewable energy
Hybrid plug-in hybrid operation is attractive for many ships due to flexibility and fuel saving and reduced emissions
Hybrid operation with variable operational profiles reduce operational cost and emissions with the right configuration and operational profile

Various demand side management techniques and its role in smart grid–the stat...IJECEIAES
The current lifestyle of humanity relies heavily on energy consumption, thusrendering it an inevitable need. An ever-increasing demand for energy hasresulted from the increasing population. Most of this demand is met by thetraditional sources that continuously deplete and raise significantenvironmental issues. The existing power structure of developing nations isaging, unstable, and unfeasible, further prolonging the problem. The existingelectricity grid is unstable, vulnerable to blackouts and disruption, has hightransmission losses, low quality of power, insufficient electricity supply, anddiscourages distributed energy sources from being incorporated. Mitigatingthese problems requires a complete redesign of the system of powerdistribution. The modernization of the electric grid, i.e., the smart grid, is anemerging combination of different technologies designed to bring about theelectrical power grid that is changing dramatically. Demand sidemanagement (DSM) allow customers to be more involved in contributors tothe power systems to achieve system goals by scheduling their shiftableload. Effective DSM systems require the participation of customers in thesystem that can be done in a fair system. This paper focuses primarily ontechniques of DSM and demand responses (DR), including schedulingapproaches and strategies for optimal savings.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the need for smart metering of facilities at the branch circuit level and
determine if such implementations would pay back their investment.
Energy Conservation
Energy conservation effort made to reduce the consumption of energy by using less of an energy service.
This can be achieved either by using energy more efficiently or by reducing the amount of service used.
Energy conservation reduces the need for energy Services and can result in increased environmental quality national security, personal financial security and higher savings.
Energy can be conserved by reducing wastage and losses, improving efficiency through technological upgrades and improved operation and maintenance.
On a global level energy use can also be reduced by the stabilization of population growth.
In the case of fossil fuels, the conservation also can include finding new ways to tap into the Earth's supply so that the commonly used oil fields are not drained completely.
Meazon white paper_building_energy_profilingGiannis Gionas
Understanding the type and amounts of energy consumed by various systems within a building is fundamental in creating an energy policy and driving consumption down. Building sectors are responsible for approximately 42% of the world’s total annual energy consumption. Most of this energy is used for the provision of lighting, HVAC systems and electricity based office appliances. Buildings in the developed countries account for 50%-60% of electricity use.
Savings can start from the modest and conservative 2% due to simple behavioral changes of the building’s inhabitants and systems’ managers and go up to the impressive 20%++ due to systems automation introduction as well as building envelope interventions. For a portfolio of buildings belonging to the same company, an annual saving of 2% that can be raised to 20%, under certain conditions, could be translated to millions of Dollars or Euros bottom line results, improving EBITDA drastically.
The impact of power management on building performance and energy costsBassam Gomaa
Power quality and energy consumption are closely linked to overall building performance. Yet building managers often focus more on mechanical equipment operations. However, power problems are responsible for more than half of equipment downtime in most buildings. This paper reviews how adding power management to BMS capabilities can reduce energy costs and improve building performance while also enhancing occupant comfort.

2. Smart Grid can’t save energy by itself “Bills don’t go down automatically just because you have a smart grid. The customers have to do something.” - Patrick James, Director of Smart Grid Technologies, TXU Energy Can it really help energy efficiency programs?
3. Load shifting vs. Conservation. Demand Response programs typically shift energy usage! Exposing users to time-of-use rates will encourage them to shift some usage to lower cost periods. This does not qualify as energy savings. Some energy uses may be reduced by using, for example, dimmable lighting ballasts, producing a net conservation effect. Only the curtailed energy usage counts towards energy efficiency goals!
4. Smart Grid increases energy savings: Energy usage feedback can increase energy savings. Automated and continuous monitoring tools will improve yields. Better electricity usage data can improve program designs. Smart meters can reduce EM&V costs; savings can be reinvested. Dynamic pricingcan reduce overall usage. Smarter transmission management can reduce line loss.
5. Energy Usage feedback Energy use feedback lowers residential consumption by up to 11%. * However, persistence of feedback savings is suspect… Not much information about feedback saving associated with commercial and industrial users. * King and Delurey, 2005
6. Automated Diagnostics. Whole building meter data continuously tracks performance revealing energy wasting issues. Continuous monitoring can reduce rebound and increase energy savings persistence. Combining meter data & equipment data permits load disaggregation and precision fine tuning. Energy savings potential strongest in residential and small commercial buildings.
7. More detailed electric usage data. Better data going in; better results coming out. Detailed baseline data about building’s energy use and target market load shape combined with better utility data management systems will improve the design of EE programs. This will help identify priority targets and improve the effective yield of utility EE program offerings.
8. Dynamic pricing effects. Exposing users to dynamic pricing has reduced usage 4% in residences.* Energy savings depends on whether the load is curtailed or simply shifted. Impact depends on how high prices peak. CPP pricing effective at motivating when price differential are low. * King and Delurey, 2005
9. Reduced EM&V costs. Use of 15 minute interval meter data results in more accurate baseline and post-implementation modeling that can identify targeted energy saving. Using more accurate data for evaluation, measurement and verification may lead to significant cost savings compared to conventional on-site evaluation processes - permitting reinvestment of savings into more EE programs. Also permits tracking of energy usage over time…
10. Energy Savings Persistence Better data will permit us to go beyond verification and track performance over time. Continuous performance data can spot rebound effects and enable continuous commissioning to ensure energy savings persistence. Retro-commissioning impacts made more enduring by ability to detect problems in building energy systems. Energy savings “rebound” estimated from 5% to 40%
11. Reduce Line Loss The electric power industry loses 12% to 15% of all electricity produced. One of the most effective ways to reduce line losses requires continuously adjusting voltage control settings in response to changing system conditions. For this approach to be effective, a centralized automatic process is required (ie., a “smart” grid). * * EPRI Transmission Efficiency Initiative, 2010
12. Conclusions Measure-based incentives may be replaced with whole building approach. Widespread deployment of automated diagnostic tools will streamline EM&V and enable continuous commissioning. “In the future, demand response, energy efficiency, operational improvements and distributed generation may be combined to a single integrated offering with performance tracking to increase persistence.” * * Wiring the Smart Grid for Energy Savings: Mechanism and Policy Considerations – Hannah Friedman & PriyaSreedharan

the potential impact of feedback on energy consumption could be even greater for low energy buildings with solar photovoltaics (PV). For instance in an early California ZEH, the occupants who were previously not interested in their low energy house found that the energy feedback meter provided with the PV system became a powerful motivator to lower their energy use to better match the output of the solar electric system. Current research in Great Britain underscores the potential of feedback in grid-connected PV homes (Keirstead, 2005).recent, larger utility studies have shown indicated savings from residential energy feedback of 0-7%
Whole building meter data continuously tracks performance revealing energy wasting issues: scheduling, unoccupied energy usage, demand peaks, correlations with outside temperatures, etc.Continuous monitoring can reduce rebound and increase energy savings persistence. Combining meter data & equipment data permits load disaggregation and precision fine tuning. This is limited by interoperability challenges with other data sources, especially in industrial uses.
