Editor's Notes

• #2 Key Points: This presentation is to help explain cloud computing, what it can do for your business and how Microsoft can help
• #3 Presenter ScriptThese days, business is very volatile and, in some cases, transformational. When we talk with our customers around the world, we are hearing three consistent themes, regardless of their industry or segment type: Save me moneyIncrease our productivityHelp us grow our businessRight now, of these three, our customers are predominantly focused on saving money. Budget cycles aren't that different from one company to another—they're all very painful. And as you go through a budget cycle, we know that at the core is the question: “How do I optimize my IT budget and help my company sustain and grow?” The challenge is to direct IT investments to areas that deliver a strategic advantage in preparing the organization to survive today’s economic challenges while positioning it for success in the evolving business climate long term. So, today as we talk through Microsoft’s vision in the enterprise, I’d like to discuss how we are focused on helping you achieve all three of these goals, but in particular how we can help you save money. Whether you choose a Microsoft® solution or not, I think exploring these strategic areas with your IT department is important in determining how to mobilize to drive savings and growth.
• #4 Highlight the differences between today’s distributed computing model and Azure.Tell the old/current story. Fixed cost. Large DC’s – global reach, primarily HP and Dell hardware, built for massive scale to power the world apps. Last year microsoft purchase one out of every five servers manufactured. Customers have the ability to quickly scale out their apps at a very low price. Better efficiency – economies of scale and economies of skill. For the past 10 years Microsoft has been managing cloud apps. Tell ME – 2 billion unique calls per year, Bing – 3 Billion unique queries per month, XBOX LIVE – 23 Million subscribers,, Windows Hotmail 370 Million active accounts.$2.3B invested in datacenters worldwide. Retro fitted shipping containers with their own heating, cooling and power. Each container has 2K servers. Last year we purchased one out of four servers world wide.
• #5 Key Points: Microsoft has a long history of providing some of the largest cloud services in the world.Script: We’ve actually been in cloud computing for a while:We’ve been delivering some of the largest cloud services on the planet for almost 15 years. Our online properties (WL, MSN) see some 600 million unique users every monthXbox pushed out some 5 petabytes of content over Xbox Live during the week of Christmas (2009)We process up to 9.9 billion messages a day via WL MessengerWe have over 500 million active Windows Live IDsThe BPOS guys have a million paying users in 36 countries and regionsEven MS Update/Windows Update … operates at incredible scale - pushes out over a petabyte of updates every month to millions of servers and hundreds of millions of PCs When you look at our experience, our commitment and our continued leadership in cloud computing there are a number of fairly substantial differences between us and other providers.
• #8 Quincy, Washington: ~ 500K sq ft, 27MW, entirely hydro-electric powerSan Antonio, Texas: ~477K sq ft, 27MW; recycled water for coolingChicago, Illinois: ~707,000 sq. ft. with critical power of 60 MW, water side economization, containersDublin, Ireland: ~570K sq ft, up to 27MW, outside air for cooling
• #9 Focus on SecurityPhysical security, Cybertrust certification, SAS 70 Compliance, ISO 27001, US + EU Safe HarborSustainability Microsoft’s energy consumption is 30-50% better than global industry averageInnovative data center build outs to support unique cooling capabilities to reduce carbon footprint – Dublin uses outside air cooled technology, and uses fraction of water consumption of typical global data centerMicrosoft is #3 on the Knodes Index: The Knodes Index is the best measurement of a network's connectivity to the Internet. www.fixedorbit.comA metric that measures the average number of network hops between any given IP address, and any other IP on the Internet.Out of the top 10, Microsoft is the only non-carrier on this list as of today. Updated once per week.
• #15 Key Points:No one has the breadth of cloud servicesOnly Microsoft has a the wide set of cloud services that complements on-premises softwareScript:In addition to our consumer-facing cloud services, Microsoft offers the most complete set of cloud-based solutions to meet your business needs including advertising, communications (email, telephony, meetings), collaboration (document storage, sharing, workflow), business applications (CRM, business productivity), storage, management and infrastructure services. And unique to Microsoft these sets of cloud services complement a full and rich set of on-premise software enabling often times to add cloud functionality to your existing software or move between cloud and on-premises systems.Click:And with BPOS we are seeing quite a bit of momentum of customers moving to the cloud.
• #18 Xerox File conversion in the cloud -
• #19 Kraft – They have looked at a portfolio of 325 of their applications. Now these are NOT bursting applications. Most of the applications are smaller in nature but the administrative burden takes away from IT’s ability to work on projects that truly drive the business. Now Kraft is outsourced and they have determined it is going to be far less expensive to move these applications to Azure than to keep the application with their outsourcer. Along with a Microsoft partner, Kraft has categorized each application into a category 1, 2 or 3. 1 = The application can move to Azure today. 2 = The application will need some minor modification and minor development work but it is still worth moving to Azure.3 = These applications will need a rewrite or major work to get to Azure. From there Kraft will determine the business case on re-platforming the app.
• #21 Innovation Purpose: Show how Microsoft’s commitment to innovation benefits customers.Key Takeaways:Microsoft is the leader in enterprise software innovation and has a long-term commitment to maintaining this leadership position.Examples: Innovation culture, research results, investment commitment Transition: Let’s look at “Relationships.”Timing: 3–4 minutes_____________________________________________________________________________________ Presenter Script:Microsoft has always believed in, and fostered, an innovation culture. We know that innovation fuels the development of ground-breaking and customer-centric technologies, and we are deeply committed to the process of continuous innovation. There are five main areas where Microsoft proactively cultivates an innovation culture to inspire innovations that will resonate with customers:Microsoft’s senior technical leaders manage a guided, and systematic, process that results in a shared vision of technology that we call “Quests.”We also have a longstanding grassroots tradition called “ThinkWeeks” where people from anywhere in the company can submit their creative ideas…on anything.Of course, we are always seeking customer and partner feedback to improve our current products and look for future innovation opportunities.Being a part of such a dynamic industry, we always evaluate the interesting things people are doing outside of the company. Microsoft has always tried to make judicious acquisitions of technology and people to round out our portfolio or add critical components. The final, and most important, source of innovation at Microsoft comes from our strongly funded research & development. Our investments in research and development (R&D) are what have enabled our breadth of experience, and we are absolutely committed to continuing to invest in enterprise technology. We have invested more in R&D than any other technology company in the world: we invested $9.5 billion in FY09, and we’re investing $9.5 billion again in FY10. Our ongoing commitment to innovation investment remains very strong. Across the innovation investments that we make in the rich client, server and enterprise, entertainment and devices, and Software-plus-Services, a significant portion of our R&D is directed to the enterprise focus areas that we just discussed—low-cost computing, business intelligence, corporate environmental sustainability, innovation for growth, consumerization of IT, and cloud computing. And by tightly integrating our innovation investments across the PC, Web, and phone, we are directly investing in the enterprise—so you don’t have to pay for this integration. Here are a few of our upcoming or most recent innovations:Microsoft Windows® 7 operating system: Built on the Windows Vista® operating system foundation, Windows 7 will help make your users productive anywhere, enhance security and control, and streamline PC management. If you are already running Windows Vista you will find that Windows 7 will deliver strong compatibility with Windows Vista software and devices and that Windows 7 can be managed using many of the tools used to manage Windows Vista.Microsoft Office 2010: The next wave of Office system products will be Office 2010, available in the first half of 2010. Office 2010 includes all Office system products (clients, servers and services), representing ~$1B in annual R&D investment.Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS): BPOS is a set of enterprise products delivered as a subscription service, hosted by Microsoft and sold with partners. It is designed for customers with managed IT needs. The offering includes Exchange Online, SharePoint® Online, Office Communications Online, and Office Live Meeting.Let’s look at “Relationships.”Additional Presenter Guidance:Innovation investments: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/elop/07-15-09WPC2009.mspx
• #25 [NB: Objective of this slide is to show that WA platform is partner ready for our two main partner audiences, SIs and ISVs, by providing evidence.]Microsoft has always been partner ready. As you see from this slide Windows Azure platform is partner ready and has gained broad industry momentum across two of our main partner groups, strategic SIs and commercial ISVs.We have support from all the major IT partners including strategic relationships with Accenture and Infosys. We are working with the largest software companies in the world to create versions of their software for our cloud such as Autodesk while also enabling a number of start-ups like Glympse or new business ventures within our enterprise accounts like 3M. Our biggest customer is actually the smallest logo on this slide---Microsoft. We are using Windows Azure today, it is the platform that every Microsoft online service will use. The only exceptions are Bing and Hotmail which need a unique platform for their specific purpose. We are betting our business on the cloud, and our platform will be Windows Azure. The quoted text on this scream will not be readable when projected due to font sizes that are too small. If the quotes are critical to the message, recommend we break up the slide so that each quote is on it’s own slide or provide this slide as a handout.
