2. Action/Comedy
• The genre chosen in our group is a hybrid of
action and comedy
• These two genre are very different but can still
be made into a good film which normally
show characters like with a serious authority
such as a cop which would normally show
them with a funny side of the action making it
a comedy.
3. Action/Comedy
• This would create a odd feel and would also
create the base settings for the film to be a
comedy with action.
• A action/comedy has different levels of each
genre in it. For example, Bad Boys has more of
the action side but still with a comedy side
laced into it. Then Pineapple Express has more
of a comedy side to it.
4. Different Conventions Inside The Genre
• Conventions using CMINTS:
• Characters
• Mise-En-Scene
• Iconography
• Narrative
• Themes
• Sounds
5. Characters
• Most action/comedies have the typical
hero who would normally play the part
of the serious one and the typical
sidekick or partner who would play the
‘funny guy’.
6. Characters
• For example: In Hot Fuzz the serious character of
Police Officer, Sergeant Nicholas Angel has the
role in looking after a village where bloody crime
are hidden in the village’s ‘Fatal accidents’
covered up by the ‘Elders’ of the village.
Nicholas's partner Danny has the typical role of a
‘dumb’ cop lacking in any intelligence of how to
be a Police Officer.
7. Mise-En-Scene
• The costumes typical seen in a action/comedy
film are either portrayed in a way of
seriousness or a comedic way.
• This look at the costumes shows us how much
of each genre is shown in the hybrid genre.
8. Mise-En-Scene
• For example: In The Other Guys, comedic and
seriousness are shown in two different sets of
partners:
9. Iconography
• Iconography is key to the viewers to find out
what the genre is in the film and to make it
clear what is going on.
• Iconography can come in many different forms
like high technology gadgets and guns for
action and funny looking or nerdy and unusual
clothing and facial expressions to indicate
comedy.
10. Action Iconography
• Action Iconography has many forms.
• Fast cars, guns, explosions, villains, flash
clothing etc. all these show that the film is a
action as of the more serious look at props
and Icons
• For example, the film Chill Factor indicates a
action from it’s explosions, guns and cars.
11. Comedy Iconography
• Comedy iconography also has many forms.
• Comedy films use iconography include idiotic
people, unusual actions, comedy characters and
facial expressions.
• For example, the film Hot Fuzz features Simon
Pegg and Nick frost. These actors are well know
to the comedy film industry and represents a
instant icon for comedy.
12. Themes
• Themes in a action/comedy film are very
much the same.
• Normally we will see the two main characters
of the film in partnership with each other to
find and stop the ‘Bad Guys’
• This is seen in action/comedy films like Hot
Fuzz and Bad Boys I and II.
13. Themes
• Hot fuzz shows Police Officer, Sergeant
Nicholas Angel with his partner Danny fighting
to find out mysterious deaths in the town
where they live.
14. Themes
• Bad Boys I and II show Police partners and
best friends, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett
fighting to stop Drug dealers in Miami.
