When we eat, food is mixed with saliva in the mouth and swallowed down the esophagus into the stomach. In the stomach, gastric juices mix with the food before it passes into the small intestine where juices from the pancreas, liver, and intestine further break it down into nutrients that are absorbed into the bloodstream and waste that moves to the large intestine and leaves through the anus.
