This document summarizes a report on efforts to protect agricultural land in peri-urban regions of Australia. It outlines how traditional planning policies aim to protect this land but contemporary planning practice often fails to do so, prioritizing urban development instead. Insights from Barcelona show that a "double protection" approach of both land use planning tools and collaborative governance initiatives between farmers and multiple levels of government can be more effective at supporting agriculture near cities. The report examines these issues through the case study of planning changes impacting the Virginia horticultural district near Adelaide, Australia.
