Social Media is simply people COMMUNICATING through
new technologies

FACEBOOK: the largest social media network
FOURSQUARE: social media application that shares a
user’s ‘location‐base’
TWITTER: A micro‐blog network
LINKEDIN: #1 Professional network site
Other network sites include: Flickr, MeetUp, Reddit,
and StumbleUpon
11. Social Media Principles
‐ Start with a GOAL in mind
‐ You DO NOT have to be everywhere all the time!
‐ Establish employee usage GUIDELINES
‐ LISTEN CAREFULLY then monitor continuously
‐ Be PREPARED to act quickly when required
‐ Each social media vehicle (e.g. Twitter) requires
at least 32 hours/month
‐ Consider out‐tasking for a rapid, professional
EFFECTIVE start
