This introduction & overview of Host Leadership will look at the six roles - not rules - that make a great Host Leader. When combined with with explicit positions that Host Leaders take, we'll discover that leading is all about relationships with others. And, when we evolve how we think about leading, we open ourselves up to amazing possibilities. The idea of Host Leadership is a metaphor rooted in hundreds of years of human history. It's a simple, yet powerful metaphor that we can use as we focus on providing a great environment for our modern workplace.

How Do You Lead?
We interact with others on a regular basis, and help each other all the time. We rarely take time to analyze how we're interacting with others. In this session, we used an activity to see how we interact with others, and become aware of some of our own approaches. This activity allows us to become more aware of how we interact with others, and expose us to other ways we might want to consider incorporating in our approach. And while it's titled "how do you lead", it's not just for leaders, or people in management positions; this is for anyone that interacts with other human beings as part of their job, or as part of their personal life.
Systems Thinking
This is the material presented at the PrDC Conference in Regina, 2023. The material provides an introduction to Systems Thinking using the Ball Point Game as an example of a System. Other systems are discussed during the talk.
Starting with Agile
Regardless of what type of work you do, there may be benefits to applying some of the ideas articulated in the Agile Manifesto. This talk illustrates a few first steps you can take and try to uncover opportunities to improve how you deliver value.

Acceptance Criteria
There are many ways to write great Acceptance Criteria. Often, we focus on what gets written, a cary-over from a time when requirements were scribed by one person, and then thrown over a wall to be developed and tested. As teams evolve and being working in a more collaborative manner, there are newer approaches we can take to coming up with great Acceptance Criteria. Not only do certain formats, like the Gherkin syntax, help us explore the problem space and align on what we expect to have happen, but we do this as a team, creating a shared and common understanding, avoiding misunderstandings. It's a way for us to get the ideas and assumptions out of our heads. As just one example, I was working with a team (in a domain I didn't know a lot about) - I offered to write some Acceptance Criteria for the team, as a sample they could follow, and in doing so, found 11 scenarios that the subject matter experts hadn't even considered. Imagine being able to do things like that with your team!
Kanban Intro & Overview
Kanban is a lean methodology for managing workflow. It uses visual cues like boards and cards to limit work in progress and optimize flow. The document discusses Kanban principles of starting with your current process and evolving it, as well as practices like visualizing work, limiting work in progress, measuring and managing flow, making policies explicit, and collaborating to improve. Examples of Kanban boards and metrics like cumulative flow diagrams are provided to illustrate Kanban concepts and techniques.
Systems Thinking with the Ball Point Game - A&B 2019
This document introduces systems thinking concepts through an exercise called the Ball Point Game. It defines a system as a network of interdependent components working together toward a common aim. Systems thinking views relationships rather than isolated parts and sees how parts interact rather than analyzing them separately. The document uses the Ball Point Game to demonstrate these concepts, where teams pass balls through their members according to rules while aiming to improve their score. It discusses analyzing the game and one's work as a system and addresses how the interactions of parts produce emergent behavior.
An Introduction to Systems Thinking - GOAT Conference 2018
The document introduces systems thinking and uses the Ball Point Game as an example. It defines a system as a network of interdependent components working together to achieve an aim. Each part has its own purpose and interacts with others. We cannot understand a system by looking at its parts in isolation without considering why it exists as a whole. Systems thinking views relationships, connectedness, and patterns over isolated objects and contents. The Ball Point Game is analyzed as a system with many interdependent elements, like rules, players, facilitator, and environment, all influencing its outcome.

Systems Thinking TO S2E04
This document summarizes a SystemsThinkingTO podcast episode about complexity, the Cynefin framework, and using Lego to demonstrate it. It discusses using Pareto analysis to identify the most impactful problems to address. The guest speaker then uses a Lego activity divided according to the Cynefin domains (obvious, complicated, complex, chaotic) to show how problems in each domain require different approaches. The Ready-Made Garments (RMG) industry in Bangladesh is a cornerstone of the economy, but increasing costs and stagnant productivity pose significant challenges to profitability. This study explores the implementation of Lean Management in the Sampling Section of RMG factories to enhance productivity. Drawing from a comprehensive literature review, theoretical framework, and action research methodology, the study identifies key areas for improvement and proposes solutions.
Through the DMAIC approach (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control), the research identifies low productivity as the primary problem in the Sampling Section, with a PPH (Productivity per head) of only 4.0. Using Lean Management techniques such as 5S, Standardized work, PDCA/Kaizen, KANBAN, and Quick Changeover, the study addresses issues such as pre and post Quick Changeover (QCO) time, improper line balancing, and sudden plan changes.
The research employs regression analysis to test hypotheses, revealing a significant correlation between reducing QCO time and increasing productivity. With a regression equation of Y = -0.000501X + 6.72 and an R-squared value of 0.98, the study demonstrates a strong relationship between the independent variables (QCO downtime and improper line balancing downtime) and the dependent variable (productivity per head).
The findings suggest that by implementing Lean Management practices and addressing key productivity inhibitors, RMG factories can achieve substantial improvements in efficiency and profitability. The study provides valuable insights for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers seeking to enhance productivity in the RMG industry and similar manufacturing sectors.

Is Agile dead? It depends on what you mean by 'Agile'. If you mean that the organizations are not getting the promised benefits because they were focusing too much on the team-level agile "ways of working" instead of systemic global improvements -- then we are in agreement. It is a misunderstanding of Agility that led us down a dead-end. At Org Topologies, we see bright sparks -- the signs of the 'second wave of Agile' as we call it. The emphasis is shifting towards both in-team and inter-team collaboration. Away from false dichotomies.
