• Teeth grinding
• Reduction in appetite
• Not maintaining body weight
and condition
• Dull coat
• Poor temperament
• Stereotypical behaviours,e.g.
weaving, box walking, crib
biting, windsucking and
aggressive behaviour
towards people and/or horses
17. Causes of ulcers
• Insufficient roughage
• Decreased saliva
production
• Regulated meal times
• High grain rations
• Exercising on an empty
stomach
• Stress / intense stabling

• Continuous access to food
• Feeding time …less manic
• Not charging across the yard
or into the stable after a
lesson
• Horses look better
• Safer

• More content to leave their
