This document summarizes a meeting for horse owners after the Pinery fire in South Australia. It discusses the emotional and behavioral impacts on horses after the disaster, including changes in herd hierarchies and increased sand colic issues. It provides advice on managing horses during recovery, including reviewing property layouts and care routines. Several owners shared their stories of implementing changes like reducing paddocks and fencing off hazardous areas. The document encourages owners to connect through informal gatherings and social media to share ideas and support each other during the long recovery process.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

If day-to-day functioning is seriously
affected for more than two months
after the event, it’s important to
discuss it with a professional.

7. DO
give yourself time ** sit down and
share time with your horse**
try to keep a routine going e.g. work,
study ** hoof care**
return to normal activities ** go
riding! (borrow a horse)**
set realistic goals – don’t take on too
much, but try to find goals that keep
you motivated ** it might take +6
months to get all the fencing
back…….But I love the new layout**
review and reward progress – notice
even the small steps **take daily pics
of your horses & property**
talk about the ups and downs of
recovery ** **
DON’T: use alcohol or drugs to try to cope - work too much - engage in stressful family or
work situations- withdraw from family and friends - stop yourself from doing things that you
enjoy- avoid talking about what happened - take risks.

10. After a fire (or other
natural disaster)
provides the
opportunity to take a
fresh look at how
horses are managed
on properties.
Is there an easier way
to manage horses?
Perhaps a less labour
intensive way?

Working with the constraints (e.g.
rainfall) and further ‘acts’ of
mother nature e.g. dust storms
There is time to reflect on your
horse related goals
How will horses be managed short
term?
Considerations for mid-term
management strategies, especially
as the first grass/crops get
established to bind the soil
Longer term? Future lifestyle
changes, income streams, family
support for farm jobs

14. Nicki implemented layout changes for Kersbrook Equestrian Centre.
No more wire fencing
Fewer paddocks, different yarding options
New laneways and shelter belts
Reduced use of steeper land and fenced off wetter areas
One benefit: new horse care regime, reduced staffing costs for feed out to horses

This is how the Equicentral system works in dot point formNo horses standing around in gateways - this means less mud/dust and its associated problems i.e. skin conditions such as greasy heel/mud fever. It also means less erosion/soil loss/weeds.Less manure is dropped in paddocks. This save lots of time if you pick up your manure anyway. The horses come in for feed you do not have to cart it to them. This saves you either pushing feed in a wheelbarrow through the mud (wind and rain) or buying an expensive vehicle so that you can drive through the mud (wind and rain).Hay is fed in the yard rather than paddocks. Easier to manage weeds in hay.The horses come to you - saves you having to go to them. When you want them, you call them. Horses will give up a whole paddock full of grass for one carrot. Safer in fire and flood and the yard/arena is also a fire break. In an emergency they also come to you instantly.Horses have to move more. Any movement is good.
