2. Colours
Black and red are used most commonly on horror movie posters as they have
connotations of Blood, Danger and Darkness.
Darkness brings back our childhood fear of the dark and fear of the unknown.
Black is also a very dark colour so represents the dark themes within the film
and both red and black are classic horror conventions.
Red represents blood and danger as all warning road signs are red. This
subconsciously tells the reader that the protagonist will be in danger and that
feeling will be transferred to them. In horror, it also represents the blood that
will no doubt be spilt throughout the film.

3. Style and Font
Most of the horror posters are minimal with lots of space for monsters and evil to hide. It
makes our minds imagine what could be there and can sometimes represent the dark
psyche of a character. This also makes the poster easier to take in at a glance as there is less
information to take in.
They are all neat with a margin around each edge before text and text tends to be in line
with the rest of the text.
Small print and an image relating to the title or story are on the poster usually and give
more information to the reader as well as the image catching their eye. The “makers of” text
is also common as it persuades people to go and see the film if they like others that the
person has made. They are mainly sans serif font and if not then it is usually just the title of
the film with a special font design. This is because sans is far easier to read and the human
mind remembers more of the information at a glance if it is written in sans serif.

4. Ratings and Other
The posters often have release dates on them or general times that the film
will be coming out (usually around Halloween).
They also tend to have ratings on the so that you are not disappointed if you
really like the look of the film from the poster and then look it up to discover
it’s an 18 and you can’t see it yet ( I can in 2 months, yay!). This also tells
parents how bad the film could be, themes wise and allows them to choose
whether their child is subjected to it or not.
A Tag line of some sort are fairly common but not necessary. It can add to the
scare factor however so I may want one in my poster unless it will give the
game away too much.
