Sound is the most important aspect of horror trailers according to the document. Short snappy notes like a "dinging" sound in The Woman In Black trailer help build suspense by reminding the audience of a jack-in-the-box waiting to pop out. Silence is also commonly used in horror trailers right before a climax or jump scare. Contrasting happy music that then changes can catch the audience off guard to establish twists. The document concludes the author will use contrapuntal sounds and silence in their own trailer because research showed these were most effective at creating suspense.

1. Types of music and sound in horror trailers.
Sound is probably the most important aspect in horror trailers. The sounds in
horror trailers help to establish the mood of a scene. For example, in The
Woman In Black trailer, there is a constant ‘dinging’ sound over a little girl
reciting a creepy poem. The ‘dinging’ helps build suspense because it is a
short snappy note. It reminds the audience of a ‘jack in the box’ they are
waiting for something to pop out and scare them. As for the voice over, a little
girl reading a poem is especially scary in horror films because little girls are
genre signifiers. Throughout the years little girls have built up a reputation in
horrors for being creepy and vulnerable. This is because little girls are seen is
as reputation of innocence, this is a complete opposite of how they are
portrait in horrors. Other horror trailers might use, fast high pitch notes to
build suspense. Silence is also the norm in horror trailers; it would normally
come before the climax, or maybe a ‘jump scare’. In The Woman In Black
trailer the silence came before the antagonist was shown to audience directly.
In some cases, horror trailers might use ‘happy’ and ‘joyful’ music to
completely contrast with the plot; it will then change the music to something
more fitting of the genre. This change is intense and will catch the audience
off guard. Contrapuntal sound establishes how there will be twists and turns
in the movies narrative.
From my research, I have decided I will implement the contrapuntal sounds
because I found that I was the most effective on me. Furthermore I will also
use silence, because it’s creepy. It reminds me of the calm before the storm.
The audience will no what is coming but it will still be effective.

Relevance This research is highly relevant to my research because it
helps me to understand what type of music and sounds in to
my production. Since music and sound is probably the most
important feature in a horror trailer it makes it probably the
most key bit of information that will benefit my trailer.
