Evaluation Part One
Section A
My horror trailer fits in the genre of horror because of the generic horror
conventions we used within it. As our trailer was a gory/ psychological horror
the trailer contained a reasonable amount of body horror. This is normal for a
lot of horror movies to contain large amounts of gore, one horror movie which
shows this is Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Another horror genre used in our trailer was the theme violence, our trailer is
about a girl called Francesca who gets sexually assaulted by her father, she then
murders him and other men to get her revenge. Violence is used in out trailer
when she killing her father and other men, another film that uses violence is
scream two. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9aUxfTTLfk.
We have also used low key lighting and enclosed creepy locations; this was
done in the final kill of the trailer when it shows Francesca starting to torcher a
man. Low key lighting and creepy locations is also used in the movie The Birds
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwOhqGhP-mk.
Thomas Schatz talked about how genre was important to analysing film; he
thought that genre was needed in film to help with different things. Such as
helping to sell films to a direct audience and also helping people to have a clear
expectation of the film. Genre set a template for films to help filmmakers know
what their audience want.
Section B
Our trailer fits the genre of horror through the use of intertitles; our
intertitles help show part of the story line clearer. The style of our intertitles
also link in well with our genre as they are blood dropping in water, this also
helps make the subgenre clearer to the viewer. Our trailer like the trailer for
2006’s Omen trailer it stays the same pace for most of the way through, this is
so that the main focus is explaining the story line to grab people’s attention
and to make them want to find out what happens
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dxEtoTXZE0. Towards the end of the
trailer we used quicker paced scenes to try create suspense. One trailer I saw
this same technique in was Insidious
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1YbOMDI59k, they used quick pace
shots to create suspense and to create jump scares, also like out trailer
Insidious starts of slow to show the storyline. I used both of these trailers to
help me think about the pacing of our trailer and to also help look into what
type of music works best for a horror trailer. We used music that showed the
emotion of the main character Francesca as we thought it help show her
point of view of the storyline.
Section C
The auteur influence I brought to our trailer was the love for gore; I was
mainly interested in how we could make the gore effects. Another auteur
influence I bought to the group was my interest in photography; this helped
us experiment with different camera angles. Our trailer was distinctive
because of the gore effects we used, because of this out trailer fell under the
subgenre of a psychological/gory horror trailer. We were influenced by a real
auteur called Tom Savini who was the make-up and effects artist for films
such as Dawn of the dead (1979) and Day of the Dead (1985). Savini got into
make-up and effects after being in the Vietnam War, he used his experience
with real life horror to make the effects more lifelike and shocking. Andrew
Sarris wrote about how Auteur’s Theory can be the best way to approach
films, it does this by identifying the best director and analysing their
cinematic style.
