Horror genre powerpoint
1. Horror Genre
Gore Emotions/guts
Scared Expectation
What comes into mind when
you think of Horror? Innovation
Blood
Victim
Aggressor
2. Concept Of Horror
• The genre of horror is identified by the
emotions/feelings it provokes e.g.
suspense, fear, mystery
• We can also identify horror by our relationship
with the monster/villain. In a horror
film/trailer we view the behaviour/look of the
monster as outside of our moral
framework, e.g. with fear, disgust, revulsion.
3. Ultimate Horror
• Ultimate horror is the unthinkable
• Emotional manipulation – playing on the
emotional and psychological
• For example in Rosemary’s Baby when her
husband was involved in raping her

4. Graphic Horror
• Graphical horror plays on one’s
physical reaction
• The unwatchable, characterised by
spectacle, gore, shocking scenes
• An example of this is Saw:

5. Intellectual Puzzle
• An intellectual puzzle engages the audience and
makes you think
• Films were the viewer must “puzzle” out the
plot, the solutions or what is “really” going on
• Duplicate, parallel or ambiguous realities that the
viewer must resolve
• Conventional wisdom said puzzle films were a
niche genre, appealing only to 'brainy' types.
2010 proved that wrong when "Inception"
snagged $825 million at the box office
6. Visceral Response
• This is the physical gut reactions, an emotional
string
• Releases adrenaline
• An example of this is in The Shining:

• As an audience we fear that Shelly Duvall was
going to be attacked but then she wasn’t, our
emotions and ‘fear factor’ levels were being
played with
7. Counter Cultural
• This is when the audience’s response in the film
world differs to their response to real life
situations
• We can drop what we believe is right or wrong
and its accepted
• An example of this is in Let The Right One In
when Eli killed and ate two innocent men, and as
an audience we agreed with what she did, and
may have even been encouraging what she
did, but in real life we would not respond in this
way
