2. Analysis of my questionnaire
Most of the responses I have collected say they like horror movies, with the exception of one. The responses
mostly pointed to the same answers, for example they usually say the colours they think of when talking about
the horror genre are black and red, which is possibly because these colours are dark and related to violence, as
red connotes blood, anger and rage. Similarly, the colour black connotes death and darkness. These emotions
are themes that are regularly visited by horror films as the main objective is to scare the audience and make
them feel tense or uncomfortable. When asked what weapon they like the main antagonist to use, the majority
of participants preferred it to be a sharp object, and more specifically a knife as it’s a commonly used
household object and has been used as a horror convention for decades, but really spiked when ‘the master of
suspense’, Alfred Hitchcock, used it in his hit movie “Psycho” that was released in 1960 and has been watched
millions of times over, even more recently, for example, American psycho. After collecting information on
which locations are the best for horrors, I found that the most effective examples are houses, preferably
haunted or isolated as it adds a background story for the characters to build on and hooks the audience as they
like to see what the story entails, thus gripping the audience. The focus group said that they felt like they
preferred this more because it adds a realistic setting and also, makes them feel like they have an unsafe &
unsecure environment when they themselves watch the movie at home.
