3. The History of Thriller-Jack Corrigan
Chosen Genre â Psychological Thriller
For our A2 coursework in the development of our project and trailer, me and my group have chosen the genre thriller with the sub-genre of psychological to make it psychological thriller,
we have chosen this genre as it helps us to create unique ideas to work with within this genre and make piece which will definitely stand out. Thriller is a genre which holds a quite
unique way of doing movies which leave audiences most of the time not realizing that they were watching it, most of the time having them believe they just watched some sort of horror
or action but donât often recognize the certain patterns of connotations of thriller. It has been used in multiple media mediums like stage productions, novels or movies with an exciting
plot, typically involving crime or espionage. However, the thriller genre began a very long time ago long before this type of industry ever even appeared in movies that hit the big
screen. When looking into the history behind this genre we see that the first thought of installations of this genre in a prototype version first begun being used in poems long ago, for
example Homerâs Odyssey uses similarsigns and connotations through very familiartechniques as modern day thrillers we would see being produced today. The hero of this epic poem,
Odysseus, begins a huge journey to get home to be with his wife, Penelope, however on this epic journey he had to experience extraordinary hardships and trials. Meeting and
contending with various icons of the Greek mythology, like the One Eyed Giant, the Cyclops and the Sirens known for various intentions, all while battling the sea on his journey home
from the Trojan War. These encounters contain anticipatory suspense and leave the reader wondering if Odysseus will or how he ever make it home giving them more and more reason
to read on, setting the early steps and instructions for today. Great examples of how it keeps its audiences on their toes with tension and excitement are with movies by Alfred Hitchcock
with Psycho (1960) and Frenzy (1972) or even more present-day movie The Joker (2019), containing all sorts of murder, conspiracy, twists and turns with wrong accusations and
embezzlement all giving some sort feature of excitement and tension in collaborative nature with the rest.
The genre of Thriller is usually one of fiction, depending on the content it is used with, the genre can have numerous,
often overlapping subgenres with different behaviours behind them making it the reason the genre is sometimes
hard to detect by consumer. Thrillers are differed through a series of characteristics through a defining nature of what
feelings they emit, some being fear through horror, creative through psychological and even mind boggling stories
with mystery. With the moods that are transmitted from each given type of thriller, giving viewers heightened
feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety. This genre being so varied an unique with the sub
genres ranging from; Psychological thriller-Shutter Island, Lady in the water, The Guest and Joker
5. Sub Genres
⢠When it comes to these sub genres, for our project we have chosen the psychological thriller
genre, this combination of a genre first began to gain popularity in the early 90s, films from
Alfred Hitchcock began the genre and helped to develop it into what it is now. With movies like
psycho in the 1960s paving the way about a loner mother-fixated motel owner and taxidermist. It
has become an iconic film because of the famous shower scene in which a woman is stabbed
brutally. This scene has been re-enacted in many modern films and it has become an icon of the
thriller genre in future years and was a reason why movies like the Silence of the Lambs 1991 is
held in such high regard even today. When recognizing signs and connotations of this
genre psychological thrillers are suspenseful by exploiting uncertainty over characters' motives,
honesty, and how they see the world. âoften told through the viewpoint of psychologically
stressed characters, revealing their distorted mental perceptions and focusing on the complex
and often tortured relationships between obsessive and pathological charactersâ. A great example
of this was the previously discussed film the âJokerâ which follows the mentally disturbed Arthur
Fleck on his journey to find out who he is, later becoming a killer and sudden cult activist, the
movie leaves fans on their edge of their seat wondering how will the trigger fire in Arthurâs mind
to turn into the joker and what will happen to him next in a rough cruel world.

6. Who usually distribues movies of your genre
(Zaahid)
Who usually distribues movies of your genre? (Psychological Thrillers)
Netflix have a whole selection of their own psychological thrillers,
which have just been distributed to them. They also have a lot of films
and tv series which have been award winning, which will help grow
views for the other company but increases the amount of people who
use the Netflix application. Finally, Netflix, also has a Hollywood and
a Bollywood section for their films.
8. Who usually Distrubutes movies of your Genre
(Zaahid)
⢠From the previous post, I saw a similar pattern which was movies
from pre 2000âs or movies before 2005 were much higher rated than
a lot of current movies. I believe this is the case as creating films for
independent companies was not as available. Therefore, meaning the
more competition in the film market is making it harder to get higher
ratings as many films follow a similar structure or use Todorovâs
Narrative Theory. For example a film like Psycho which came out in
1960 was very highly rated ( 96% Rotten Tomatoes and 8.5/10 IMDB)
in contrast to Mother ! ( 6.6/10 IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes 68%) and
they were both produced by Paramount Pictures.
9. Why are psychological thriller genres
successful? (Zaahid)
⢠Psychological thrillers generally emphasize the unstable or delusional mental and
emotional conditions of the characters and focus on the devious depths of the
human mind. The story is often told from the point-of-view of psychologically
stressed characters, revealing their distorted mental perceptions and sometimes
featuring a lack of reality. Psychological thrillers often incorporate elements of
mystery, drama, and action and characters may have some sort of abnormal
psychological state such as anxiety, split personality, or paranoia. Psychological
thrillers are particularly suspensefulbecause they exploit uncertainty over
characters motives, honesty, and how they see the world. Psychological thrillers
donât only play with the characters minds, but they also play with the readerâs
mind. The fear and anxiety experienced by the characters can drive the
psychological tension in unpredictable ways, often surprising the reader with
twists or different angles on the same problem. Finally, characters rarely rely on
their physical strength to overcome their enemies, but rather on their mental
resources. Often the enemies are not external other characters or circumstances
but internal phobias, insanity, urges and fears.
11. Audience profile (Khaled)
The target audience ofmanypsychological thrillersare 18+, this because theycontain manydisturbingcharacters with psychological
illnesses. Some common themes in most thriller films are violence, psychological issues. These both maybe a problem for younger
audiences because this could cause nightmares foryounger audiences and cause them to be horrified for a longtime. Therefore, the
thriller genre as a whole is mainlyaimed at the 18+ audience.
The gender of the audience watchingShutter Island will be both male and female because the film is for anyone who enjoys mystery
and films that make you wonder what is goingon and what will happen next.Males maybe more likely to enjoyShutter Island than
females because they maybe more drawn into the film. The audience who comes to see Shutter Island maybe explorers who enjoy
the film's challenge and adventure.Theycan enjoythe film's enthusiasm and knowledge as well.Even though this is true, individuals
who are socialists orachievers mayenjoythe film Shutter Island as well. The race of the audience is unimportant for watchingthe
film because it has no bearingon whether or not you enjoythe film. Dependingon what the film is about and what is involved, some
ethnicgroups may enjoyit. Social status mayinfluence who sees the film, as some people maynot find Shutter Island to their liking.
For example, skilled laborer's and managerial orclerical personnel might not even enjoy this film. On the other hand, theywould
enjoyit because Shutter Island requires the audience to consider the film's core vision. Those personal qualities ofthe audience can
influence the type of film that they see. People who enjoymysteryand inquiryin their films may enjoyShutter Island.People that
enjoysuspense and intrigue in a film also may enjoythis.People who love a good scare in a movie, on the other hand, are unlikelyto
appreciate this one.
12. Khaled Shutter Island Analysis (Website, Poster,
Trailer)
Shutter Island trailer analysis
⢠In the trailer of Shutter Island the mise-en-scene throughout it use colors which
are very dull and dark. This helps to suggest that the film is a thriller as they
create a tense and unsettling atmosphere. Adding to this, in some parts of the
trailer there is an added blue filter, making it look cold and mysterious. The
setting of the trailer is in a mental asylum, on an offshore island. This is a very
significant piece of mise-en-scene as it emphasizes how the asylum is the center
of the film, and how far away from society the characters are. This is done
because they tend to put the characters in dire conditions in an isolated area, to
create suspense and tension. Vladimir Proppâs philosophy on character types
proposed there were seven key character types within every text: the hero, the
villain, helper, donor, false hero, princess and the dispatcher. DiCaprio is depicted
throughout the trailer to be the main protagonist of the film, meaning that clearly
the plot will revolve around his character and the obstacle he must overcome.

15. Shutter Island Social Media
⢠Shutter Island does not have its own website, but it can be found on Paramount's since they are the distributor.
The major eye-catchingtitle is the Paramount logo at the top left of the page, which standsout because it is in a
bold black font that fits the thriller genre. There are subheadings at the top left of the page that say 'Movie,
games/apps/inside,and shop.' This is used to provide a consistentdirection to all goods related to Paramount, as
the Shutter Island audience may be interested in Paramount's other work. This also aids in the developmentof a
large audiencefor paramount, which aids in the support for future productions, which is a common practice for a
productioncompany, particularlyone from the five major distributors. The use of the Calibrifont gives a polished,
clear image that fits the style of their 21st century films. The use of black for the font enables the title to stand out
and be widely accepted against the white background. On the website, there are several links to social media
platforms, which are used by Paramount to connect with their viewers for this film, providingthem with
information and encouraging new people to go see the film. Links to the Facebook page, YouTube,Twitter, and
other sites are displayed. This seems to be a simple way for them to inform people about the film, reaching a
broader audience. This also implies that the target audiencefor this film will be younger people, who are more
likely to use social media and spread the word about the film on the internet. Underneath the trailer is a link that
says "officialpage." When the viewer clicks on this, the site automaticallyredirects the viewer to their Facebook
page, from which they can learn more about the film and share information and pictures, enablingthem to
communicatewith it. It also assists with film promotionand if they share it on media platforms, it would reach a
larger audience, increasing the film's success. There are also links to more social media sites at the top right of the
page, allowingthe film to be readily promoted to its intendedaudience. That's because the majority of social
media users are young adults, meaning that they are the intended target audience. This is displayedin a blue font
to stand out againstthe white background. Use of blue encourages them to be more noticeableto the audience.
17. Group Research A2-Trailer Analysis-Shutter Island-Jack
The trailer I will be analysing is the official cinematic release trailer 1 for the conglomerate companyâs Paramount Productions movie âShutter Islandâ. A psychological thriller
mystery directed by Martin Scosese, this trailer takes a unique approach from modern trailers to create meaning but still conforms with the 3 act structure technique which is
commonly utilized today when making trailers for media text as it is effective when creating excitement and hype for the product release, which is why these cinematic trailers
always come out beforehand. With each trailer, it is split into 3 sections them being the establishing phase, the problem phase and then montage phase. For the first minute
and 5 seconds of the trailer we are in the first stage of the trailer 3 act structure being the introductory/establishing phase is where we first meet our main cast of characters of
interest, introduced to their lifestyles, their motives and the location or locations in which our film is going to take place, the people who are behind and responsible for the
creation of the project. In the first few seconds of the trailer we are shown how the camera mainly focuses on certain points of interest which create meaning all apart of the a
boat travelling off mainland to the location which is surrounded by mist giving up the sense of mystery, eeriness and isolation bringing in the viewer, generating immersion in
the plot slowly. The shots of the camera from on is critical when introducing our main characters both Leonardo di Caprio and Mark Ruffaloâs characters, collaborating with Mise
en scene using an enhanced view on what they are wearing and where they are, the clothing and props both being a part of symbolism to create meaning, a way we can tell the
personality of a person and their stance in the world. In this case we see both men wearing high end suits and hats of the 19 50s era showing they are high up in their job and
have got money to be reliable on themselves and being able to purchase such clothing. The camera in this stage then uses a extreme close up on a badge along with a non
diegtic sound bridge exclaiming the menâs roles and high authority when questioned by the guard to hand over their fire arms, this surprised response after leaving the boat
onto the island connotes a sense of walking into the unknown location. In this section, sound and editing is used together in collaboration to create meaning behind the
motives with diegetic dialogue between Leonardo and Ben kingsleyâs character talking about the patients and the institution while the editing uses quick cuts to the certain
elements they are talking about, giving visualisation to us the viewer of the dangers of these patients. Showing direct conversation constantly adapting score sound bridging
over the âcriminally insaneâ with high and low pitches to fit each scene especially one with a zoom in medium shot to one of the female patients, an old lady with a deadly
piercing stare going into the camera hold a quiet motion to her mouth holding direct contact with the audience, a connotation to us the phycological sign of giving shock to the
viewer and enticing us to watch more how this couldâve happened to an old lady. Done to drip feed us clues on whatâs really happening on this island setting us up for the rest
of the trailer on the edge of our seats. This is a common semantic of the psychological thriller genre behind the movie. This stage of the trailer can also be compared to the
same narrative model of the Todorovâs narrative theory which holds 5 stages, them being the equilibrium, disturbance, recognition of disturbance, attempt to repair
disturbance and then return to equilibrium. When it comes to this trailer we can compare both first stages of the 3 act structure and the Todorov theory as here in this
introductory phase we see the equilibrium of di Caprioâs life as a deputy going to investigate a problem with an organisation before the real problem strikes and also gives him a
powerful reinforced stance as a high ranking power. Another common trait of this trailer is institution side to it, for the first thirty seconds of the trailer was purposely put
edited together with title cards to attract a bigger audience alongside the events in the trailer, to put names of the company Paramount Pictures behind the project who were
known for movies at the time like Transformers and then shown the name of the director Martin Scosese. Known as a great director for present day movies like Wolf of Wall
Street.
18. Shutter Island-Jack
⢠From the time of the first minute and five seconds to forty five seconds later to one minute, fifty seconds, we see ourselves in the second phase to the
three act structure. We are in the problem phase, the act in which the problem which has occurred is shown to the audience telling us what type of
issue we going to be following the hero as they solve it, in this case with the trailer, the use of the camera work towards the beginning focuses on a
womanâs picture with a P.O.V shot as if we are looking at it ourselves, putting the audience in the shoes of the deputies slowly drawing us in and
immersing us in into the world. Utilization of overlapping non diegetic sound of the di Caprioâs conversation with Ruffalo briefing on her sudden
disappearance and how it is their task to find her, the quest is clearly communicated with showing us important parts about this mysterious woman
showing her picture and the room she stayed in showing to be empty, symbolising to us the disturbance and how we should look out for clues as we
watch on getting us involved with the case. A quick cutaway is used to then to Kingsleyâs character saying how âit is like she evaporatedâ with creepy
but low music to highlight the strangeness of the event, purposely edited by the producer to further continue the confusion how she could have
possibly escaped, therefore challenging us mentally in the psychological thrilling effect to want find out the result of this mystery. For the remainder
of this stage we witness a complete change in tone by the producer with the use of the 180 degree shot to show a diegetic conversation between Di
Caprio and Ruffalo to exhibit that the woman isnât the only problem in this phase, exclaiming that the people inside arenât giving them any clues and
itâs like âtheyâre afraidâ adding more to the mystery behind the location, this is further backed up by a note handed to Di Caprio with a stuttered zoom
in on the world run to almost mirror the broken mind and fear behind this patients decision, the fact she wouldnât speak out about this disappearance
and in fact is telling Di Caprio in a subtle way to get out before what ever the looming threat gets him too. Throughout this section we an idea of the
cultivation theory, with the Mise en Scene put forward about how the suits back in the fifties represented power and it is witnessed here with every
official in a high place like with the deputies and warden, with patients almost being like cattle in their white boiler suits, the blank colour used to
represent the blankness in the balance of their mind vulnerable to any practice deemed on them by the higher ups playing God. This representation is
then used in telling us through edited quick cut shots and non diegetic score music high in intensity to simulate and fit whatâs happening on screen, Di
Caprio and Ruffalo both in these white boiler suits trying to escape Shutter Island symbolising the severity of the situation that they are in and that
there is a bigger threat in play. This segment of the trailer can also play into the disturbance stage with the woman going missing and the institution
being dangerous, then the recognition of this problem stage with the note stating to run from the ill patient and finally the attempt to repair the
problem with Di Caprio and Ruffalo trying to escape to tell the outside world, â like a rat in a mazeâ like the rest of the patients. All signs of Todorov's
narrative theory being used here.
â˘
19. Shutter Island - Jack
⢠In the final section of this trailer we have the montage stage, this stage is used as the hype builder, we know
our charactersand locations, now we know how normality of this reality is being disturbed. This stage
usuallyoffers quick lines of diegetic or sound bridged non diegetic with high in volume music to match
intensity, to also grip audiences with quick shots to get them excited to see the movie and to be a conclusion
to the sneak peek as If time is running out to show the audience more so it speeds up to get as many of the
best shots as possible, to confuse psychologicallyand make them ready for the thrilling time when they
watch it matching common connotationsof the genre of the film. This trailer uses a short one compared to
other film trailersBeginning from a minute, fifty seconds into the trailer carrying on until the end. Starting
with non-diegetic dialoguestatementssaying âwhat if they were lookinginto youâ and a diegetic line from
Ruffalo shouting ânow they have us both!â, terms to relay the message to the audience as if they are being
watched, commencing the quick shots of variousscenes which challengethe realism of the movie. Showing
things of the psychological backbonebehindthe nature of this movie. After the quotes it turns to mostly
music while cycling through mind challengingscenes like water appearingout of nowhere striking Di Caprio
and Ruffalo, the higher ups of the institutionsuspiciously a plan, Di Caprio crawling through rats symbolising
what the prisoner said earlier, being attacked, seeing horrific memories and hugging a person while the melt
away. All signs and subtle clues that we are witness to Di Caprio slowly losing his mind to insanity, shouting
he wants so see under someoneâs face, an highly unnatural requestbut seems normal from his current state
mirrored in the score ramping to an all-time high in instrumentals. Having constantbeats being deepened to
get the adrenalineflowing in the viewer as they feel themselves being lost in confusion and not being able
to make sense of what is happening, keeping the audienceon the edge of their seat and hearts pumping
through this intense segment and when it's over, it only leaves them wanting to know more about how
would Di Caprio escape this impossible lookingtask.
22. Inception - Zaahid
⢠Inception do not have their own website, but rather have a link from the
Warner Bros website to their film. This could help grow their viewing
numbers, for example if fans of Warner Bros want to watch a movie they
could easily see a list of movies and click to see different movies.
⢠In the same way as their Facebook page, the website includes the same
videos of trailers and behind the scene shots, which can be viewed.
⢠Finally on the website, and a link from their Facebook page, which takes
you to the website, where you can purchase the movie or see if you have a
subscription from one of their partners such as Prime Video and view the
movie.
23. Marcus The Joker Analysis
Poster analysis
The title is white which could represent the Jokerâs sacrifice which made him the character we
see. The graphics of the poster title are clean except for a little tear in the K of The Joker title, this
could symbolise that the Joker is imperfect and parts of him might be missing. In the middle at the
top of the poster, it says âJoaquin Phoenixâ who is the actor that plays the Joker in the movie. The
list of actors and directors appear at the bottom of the poster, under the release date along with the
production company and the age rating. The key image that the poster shows is the Joker in front of
an exploding car looking pleased with himself, as if heâs basking in the chaos happening around him.
The poster is majority in a dark shade except for the centre, which is the focal point of the poster
because there is a car exploding and the Joker basking in the chaos of it all. The Joker's red suit
could symbolise blood, anger, courage or joy. The dark background could represent the mysterious
nature of the film, the fear of reality, the sophistication of the Jokerâs character, the grief that the
joker has been through or it could be the elegance of his character. The most important colors in the
poster are the red of the Jokerâs suit and the dark background because it gives insight to the
character and the tone of the movie. These colors were probably chosen to portray the movie as
accurately as the poster could through a single image. I think the movie is about the Jokerâs origin
and how he went from your average person to a psychotic criminal mastermind. The target
audience is people that are a fan of the Batmanfranchise and The Joker character.

24. Joker Website analysis -Marcus
⢠The Official Joker Website is jokermovie.net and when you open the website it instantly comes up
with the final trailer for the Joker film. After watching the trailer, the visitor is then brought to the
home screen of the website. The background of the website is a picture of the joker half way
down some outside stairs in his red suit, orange tux, green shirt and white makeup, and from the
picture the Joker seems to be happy with himself while in the sun. On the right hand side of the
website in large writing, is the Actors name, the directorâs name, the title, where to find the
movie, who produced and the cinemaâs to find it in. At the top of the page there are multiple
options like Home, Videos, synopsis, #JokerMovie, The Facebook, Twitter and Instagram logo. The
video section takes you to the trailer the viewer wouldâve seen when they first accessed the
website, but also gives the viewer the option to watch the teaser trailer also. When accessing the
synopsis section, it brings you to a page that has 5 paragraphâs, the first paragraph introduces the
director and some of the actors and gives a short and brief summaryof the film and the story. The
second paragraph speaks about the actors as well as their popular movie rolls and some of their
achievements. The third and fourth paragraph talks about the director and a few people who are
a part of the production of the movie and mentions movies they have been a part of. The fifth
and final paragraph states the production company, the label and who it will be distributed by
after itâs cinema release.
