The horn is a straight wooden pipe instrument with five holes above and one below that produces a strong yet gentle sound ranging over a little more than an octave. Historically, horns were used by shepherds and at village dances and parties in Russia, with the earliest written accounts of the horn appearing in the 18th century and horn choirs existing in the late 19th century, and horns are now sometimes included in Russian folk orchestras.
